3 1/2 Stars is what I would like 2 give it Long & Drawn out

I recently read this book because someone from Romantic Times Reader Message Board recommended it and because it had Scotland (which is my favorite romance subject) in the plot.
I read the book "The Conqueror" years ago (when it first came out) and I just discovered while reading this one that it is the pre-quel to this one. The book starts out as Stephan is a young child being fostered by (more like political hostage) the King of England while he is there he meets 3 other individuals 1st being Duncan, a young boy (who's father is the King of Scotland) is also being held. 2nd being Prince Rufus (who will later become King) and Rufus has a like of men, 3rd being Prince Henry who is brother to Rufus and of course, resents his older brother.
Stephen while traveling home is wounded and his men rest in a forest, our heroine Mary (Princess of Scotland) is in disguise and on her way to meet her betrothed for a tryst. She is captured and brought to Stephen he asks her repeatedly who she is because even though she is in disguise he know she must be a noblewoman. His Lust for her overcomes his rational behavior and he beds her... of course this back fires on him. He is already betrothed to someone else (a marriage approved and selected by the King himself)the King HATES Mary's father (the King of Scotland) and her father HATES (with a passion) King Rufus. This sends the story into some very interesting political turmoil at court which includes Stephen's father "Rolfe" in the story.
The story was long but I could not put it down. Mary is stubborn and very young (which was a norm for the writing style for when this book was written) she does some stupid things in the course of her relationship with Stephen. She is torn between her naive perception of her Father, her loyalty to Scotland, her growing LUST/LOVE for Stephen and last but not least her own head strong ways.
Stephen is no better, he has issues with the King that he never shares with anyone (accept the readers.. if you get what I mean), doesn't trust Mary-exiles her, hits her (although only once), has sexual relations outside of their marriage and goes to war on her family (Kings orders). Geoffrey is Stephen's brother he has a pivotal part in this book too, and I actually found his part more exciting and interesting. He is sexy, virile and sounds gorgeous like his father Rolfe.. but Geoffrey is to be a priest, in fact he is already in the order so you can imagine his story would be a bit more fascinating to watch. His struggle with Religion and his bodies natural "urges" LOL
You also get to see Ceidre, from "The Conqueror", Stephens mother again as well as her and Rolfe's other children.
Brenda Joyce always does a Outstanding job at keeping her history 90% accurate and when she strays she has a disclosure at the end of the book. Book does show "Rufus the Red" in a strange and sort of pathetic light. I couldn't figure out if I liked Henry or not there were times when he seemed okay and others were you weren't for certain whose interest he was taking care of.
This book has political espionage, incest, murder attempts, homosexuality, the church vs. the crown, betrayal (or was it?) a satisfying read for anyone who likes books and storylines from this time span and written in the 80's. I must also recommend over this one {KINGDOM OF DREAMS} written by Judith McKnaught pretty much almost the same identical story lines but in my opinion more of a fulfilling read... and yes JM's was written first.

This short booklet is worth the effort to learn about Vegan Nutrition and the necessity for a good source of B-Complex and either substitution, if yer into that sort of thing, and how to eat as a Vegan to provide your body sufficient nutrition exceeding daily recommended values.

A much-needed learned physician's view of vegan eating

I find this book to be such a refreshing break from the typical diet drivel put out by "big-name" physicians like Atkins. Dr. Klaper knows his nutrition, knows his medicine, and even knows his foods (the recipes are excellent.) With his kind heart, he shares the best way to save yours.

This book changed my life, for real

Dr. Michael Klaper's book "Vegan Nutritrion: Pure and Simple" changed my meat-eating-meat-loving life, pure and simple. I've been an omnivore all my life (still am) and love the taste of meat. I do have qualms about the moral issues of meat-eating, but never cared enough to limit the sweet pleasure of a great steak, fish, shellfish, lamb, chicken, or dairy product. I now eat these delicacies only in small quantities due to the influence of Dr. Michael Klaper.

Dr. Klaper's "Vegan Nutritrion: Pure and Simple" approaches vegan nutrition as just that - nutrition. It's the only book that has influenced me, and only because of its nutritional approach. Dr. Klaper says the human body has no nutritional requirement for animal products, and makes a fact-based, well-researched case supporting his claim. He outlines how the human body is not built to process animal products, and why the natural building blocks of animal products are harmful to the human body.

Due to Dr. Klaper, I lost my taste for all that delicious meat, shellfish, and dairy. I still eat it once in a while, but I consider it a treat vs. every-day basic. As a result, my body is lighter, I have more energy, my mind is clearer, and my life expectancy is longer. Thank you Dr. Klaper!!

I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about human nutrition!

Good, Thorough, and Neutral Exploration of Multiculturalist Literature + Author's Own VIew!

George Crowder does an excellent job here delving into the literature(s) of multiculturalism. Each chapter is devoted to a different aspect of multiculturalism - value monism versus relativism, whether cultures have rights, whether the state should foster nationalism, cosmopolitanism, of deliberative democracy, and the like. Crowder does an outstanding job creating a sort of dialogue between very different theorists and theories, as well as quite neutrally surveying a wide array of theorists, from laissez-faire libertarians like Chandran Kukathas to high liberals like Brian Barry and everyone in between.

Crowder starts, probably as he should, with the respected theories of Will Kymlicka, and his attempt to sketch out a sort of liberalism that grants cultures within a liberal state significant latitude to live in ways they'd like, albeit with a strong state to ensure that groups are not oppressive toward members and otherwise egregiously illiberal. (For Kymlicka, minority groups that are native to a particular area are to be afforded more latitude here than immigrant groups, for the latter chose to be where they are.) From there, Crowder gets into the critics of Kymlicka's group rights, and into discussions about whether we should talk of cultural groups in essentialistic terms (group x has traits y and z; group c has traits b and a), or whether group identity is more fluid and nuanced.

A great deal of these chapters have an overriding theme: the tension between allowing groups to live as they'd like and the desire of a liberal state to ensure that groups maintain some sort of liberal approach toward members (and liberal methods of resolving disputes between cultural groups). On one side, we have strong liberals like Brian Barry and other cosmopolitans and nationalists who believe that the polis is best served by ensuring that everyone is part of the liberal state (afforded liberal rights and exercising liberal attitudes like cosmopolitan tolerance for others). Others, like Chandran Kukathas or John Gray take an approach that gives much more latitude to cultural groups to live as they choose. (Kukathas's liberalism requires only that groups allow formal exit rights to members; Gray sees liberalism as a way of life that is not itself value neutral, such that imposing it is imposing a way of life.)

While Crowder is quite neutral and fair throughout the book, he does provide his own views on these issues in the final chapter. His is a type of Isaiah Berlin-inspired value pluralistic liberalism that is similar to that of William Galston. Because individuals must choose between different ways of life, the liberal state should promote (through things like mandatory (?) liberal education) the kind of autonomy that allows individuals to intelligently choose and revise their choices periodically. Crowder's views, of course, are relegated to one fairly brief chapter; those who want further elaboration should see his book Liberalism and Value Pluralism (Political Theory and Contemporary Politics).

All in all, a really helpful book for understanding the philosophic literature on multiculturalism.

A fantastic introduction - and a recommendation

If you want to improve your ability to analyze and visualize data, Tufte's book is a great place to start.

The book provides an excellent blend of practice, tactical advice that can be applied to any Excel or PowerPoint graph - and discussions about the nature of data that seed ideas about more powerful and complex visualizations.

Being an old book, many of the examples are historic and hand-drawn. If you're looking for click-by-click advice on how to make your next PowerPoint prettier, you might get frustrated by this book. But if you're interested in making your graphs more information-rich and analysis-friendly, you've come to the right place.

Lima's book is in many ways a modern counterpart to Tufte's, discussing analysis and visualization in a world of networks and big data. While both are fantastic reads for the data nut, I still believe that Tufte's is more useful for someone looking to get a first crash course at understanding data.

Data decorators, data-ink, instant chartjunk, and naked women

Perhaps the single most accessible book on data visualizations. You are given a tour of the history of visualizations, the seminal contributions of people such as Playfair, Tukey, and others, a rogues' gallery of sorts of awful visualizations, a peek into small-multiples visualizations, and an exposition of the principles of good graphic design and visualizations. A must-have book for anyone interested in good data visualizations.

Tufte's contention is that a lack of adequate knowledge and expertise and a mistaken notion about numbers are to blame for bad visualizations. The principles of good visualizations, on the other hand, are few and simple. The book is all about exposing bad examples and enunciating these good principles, beautifully illustrated with examples, and printed on excellent quality paper.

"The theory of the visual display of quantitative information consists of principles that generate design options... The principles should not be applied rigidly or in a peevish spirit... and it is better to violate any principle than to place graceless or inelegant marks on paper. Most principles of design should be greeted with some skepticism." [page 191]

While seemingly a trivial matter, the issue of the size of charts, whether they should be tall or horizontal, Tufte states that "Graphics should tend toward the horizontal, greater in length than height..." and "Many graphics plot, in essence (cause and effect) and a longer horizontal helps to elaborate the workings of the causal variable in more detail." [pages 186, 187]

Time-series displays are at their best for big data sets with real variability. [page 30]

Chapter 2, "Graphical Identity" Is a stunning collection of graphs that distort, lie, deceive, and exhibit all manners of skills other than those required for data visualizations.
"Much of twentieth-century thinking about statistical graphics has been preoccupied with the question of how some amateurish chart might fool the naive viewer. ... At the core of the preoccupation with deceptive graphics was the assumption that data graphics were mainly devices for showing the obvious to the ignorant. ... The assumption led down two fruitless paths in the graphically barren years from 1930 to 1970: First, that graphics had to be "alive", "communicatively dynamic," overdecorated and exaggerated.. Second, that the main task of graphical analysis was to detect and denounce deception." [page 53]

"A graphic does not distort if the visual representation of the data is consistent with the numerical representation." [page 55]
Which leads to his definition of the term, "Lie Factor", which he defines as the "size of the effect shown in graphic" divided by "size of effect in chart".

"Another way to confuse data variation with design variation is to use areas to show one-dimensional data" [page 69]
An example cited is the depiction of "the rate of inflation", for which, "graphs show currency shrinking on two dimensions, even though the value of money is one-dimensional." [page 70]

A very important observation quoted in Chapter 3 comes from Howard Weiner - "Perhaps the reason is an increase in the perceived need for graphs ... without a concomitant increase in training in their construction." [page 79]
Tufte elaborates: "Nearly all those who produce graphics for mass publication are trained exclusively in the fine arts and have had little experience with the analysis of data. ..." "... many graphic artists believe that statistics are boring and tedious. It then follows that decorated graphics must pep up, animate, and all too often exaggerate what evidence there is in the data." [page 79]
And "The doctrine of boring data serves political ends, helping to advance certain interests over others in bureaucratic struggles for control of a publication's resources. ... as the art bureaucracy grows, style replaces content. And the word people, having lost space in the publication to data decorators, console themselves... " [page 80]

Tufte defines "data-ink" in Ch 4 ("Theory of Data Graphics") as "the non-erasable core of a graphic, the non-redundant ink arranged in response to variations in the numbers represented
Data-ink ration = data-ink / total ink used to print the graphic" [page 93]
So, it should not come as a surprise, when Tufte takes a single bar with a value label at the top of the bar, and states that "the labeled, shaded bar of the bar chart, for example, unambiguously locates the altitude in size separate ways." [page 96].

Chapter 5 - "Charkjunk: Vibrations, Grids, and Ducks" is perhaps the most humorous chapter, as the title itself suggests. A quote from Johnathan Swift, indicting 17th-century cartographers, says it all - "With save pictures fill their gaps, And o'er unhabitable downs, Place elephants for want of towns." [page ] ouch!

"This may well be the worst graphic ever to find its way into print:" [page 118] refers to a "series of weird three-dimensional displays appearing in the magazine American Education in the 1970s (that) delighted connoisseurs of the graphically preposterous. Here five colors report, almost by happenstance, only five pieces of data..." [page 118]

You may not, and I certainly did not agree with Tufte's suggestions for maximizing the data-ink efficiency of the box-plot, in the chapter on "Data-ink Maximization", but they are worth examining nonetheless. However, his redesign of the bar chart, with a border and other accouterments, on pages 126-128, are excellent.

Many examples of bad visualizations cited in the book are from the "New York Times", so it is sort of reassuring when you see that the quality of visualizations on the NYT has improved a lot, and are frequently the objects of animated discussions. There may be hope, after all.

Tufte writes that an art director with overall responsibility for the design of over 3,000 graphics annually had this to say - "graphics are intended to more to lure the reader's attention away from the advertising than to explain the news in any detail. 'Unlike the advertisements,' he said, 'at least we don't put naked women in our graphics.' " [page 80] We must be all thankful for small mercies, I suppose.

The Landmark Book on Conveying Information Graphically

I own all of Edward Tufte's books, and regularly order his booklets for my MBA students. The reason is simple: to make good decisions, and to help others make good decisions, one must convey data as information and not simply as numbers, words, or even pictures. Business periodicals regularly violate the admonitions we learned in our introductory statistics courses, including failing to use zero as the bottom of any scale (these periodicals don't use zero in order to exaggerate changes). The reason that intelligent people convey data inappropriately is either to deliberately distort it, or because they've failed to read Tufte's books.

Once you've purchased this first book by Tufte, you will never look at charts or other graphical displays without a jaundiced eye. You will also will begin to be more honest in how you convey information to others. You will make better decisions, and you will raise the standard for other communicators and decision makers. Life and death decisions do get made on the basis of data, and not just in the sciences and medicine. Buy this book and you will have a very tough time putting it down.

_The Monster At The End Of This Book_ (henceforth "TMATEOTB") is a fascinating treatise on several of the philosophical problems lurking at the core of modern and classical thought. The premise -- that, with the turn of each page, the reader brings self-described "lovable, furry Grover" closer to danger at the hands of the title monster -- allows one to question the very nature of free will and destiny. Is Grover doomed to encounter the monster? The conceit that it is the act of turning pages -- the literal act of reading itself -- that causes the ending to come about inevitably leads to the question: Would the book end differently if one _didn't_ finish reading it? On another level, TMATEOTB addresses one of the paradoxes of contemporary physics: The equality of space and time. The "end of the book" is an event in the future, but the monster is not spoken of as "arriving", but as _already being there_. Thus, turning pages moves the reader and Grover not only forward in time, as in most traditional literature, but also forward in space, leading to the perilous End of the Book. Lastly, TMATEOTB is about how we are ultimately at the whim of the cosmic forces that shape our lives. The hapless protagonist tries again and again to stop the reader from turning pages by erecting brick walls and nailing one page to the other. His efforts are futile, but he remains unaware of his essential helplessness in the face of a Reader. Perhaps, the book says, we are ultimately doomed to fail, trapped within the pages of cosmic irony, but unable to prevent or even perceive the inevitability of our encounter with the monster. The shocking twist ending wraps up the disparate threads of the text, presenting issues of self-knowledge, the nature of fear, and the question of what it truly means to be a monster. Perhaps the failure of our quests for safety in an uncertain world isn't so bad, it argues, if it leads to a confrontation like the one depicted in _The Monster At The End Of This Book_.

I believe a lot of people can cite "The Monster At the End of This Book" as one of the first books they remember reading as a child. Not only because it featured a beloved character from a TV show many children grew up watching, but because it was probably their first exposure to an interactive story -- instead of simply reading a pre-written tale, children felt they were interacting with Grover himself, and that their actions affected the story itself. Before this book, not many children's books experimented with breaking the fourth wall and addressing the reader directly, and in this sense "Monster" was ahead of its time.

I recently purchased this book for a friend's baby shower gift, and she, too, said it was one of her absolute favorite books as a child and she was eager to share it with her own son when he was old enough. It's heartening to know that a simple children's book can be so beloved by all ages.

As stated before, what makes "Monster" unique is that it's main character, Grover, is fully aware that he's in a book, and tries to tell the reader to not turn the pages -- because the further you read, the closer you get to the end of the book, where supposedly a monster lurks. Grover pleads with the reader, and even resorts to increasingly silly methods to keep the reader from turning the pages. There's even a bit of suspense built up as Grover's fear builds with every page turned, and one can't help but feel a little sorry for him. Naturally, I won't spoil the ending, and I doubt any reader, no matter the age, is going to stop reading to the very end despite all Grover's best efforts.

Also, the art bears mention -- it's a loose and sketchy style, in contrast with the later Sesame Street books that would have relatively crisp and clean artwork, and very few of the pages have actual backgrounds. But I actually rather liked it as a kid, and I still like it now. The story is very simple and no-frills, and so the artwork is made to match. Also, it's nice to have a unique art style in a TV-spinoff book, where most books based on a TV show have generic-looking "canned art" instead of much in the way of creativity.

A fun and unique read for young children, this is a must for any child's library. Young readers will enjoy feeling that they have control over the story, and giggling along to Grover's antics.

If you don't own this book, get it. You won't be disappointed!!!

I had to buy this book on kindle because (sadly) my copy is in storage, and none of the people in the two houses I am connect to most days had ever HEARD of it!!! I was mind boggled. So I bought it on Kindle so that I could read it to each of them.......and yes, the pictures are critical to the story!!

The Monster at the End of this Book is an absolute classic of children's literature. In my opinion, it belongs in every home, at least every home that know about Sesame Street.

I have been reading it to my kids for years.....in my opinion it is better reading it to someone, or having it read to you, than simply reading it to yourself.

If you don't own this book, get it, you won't be disappointed.
