About the Author

James M. Henslin,�who was born in Minnesota, graduated from high school and junior college in California and from college in Indiana. Awarded scholarships, he earned his Master’s and doctorate degrees in sociology at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. After this, he was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from the National Institute of Mental Health, and spent a year studying how people adjust to the suicide of a family member. His primary interests in sociology are the sociology of everyday life, deviance, and international relations. Among his numerous books�are�Sociology: A-Down-to-Earth Approach�(Allyn &�Bacon, available in three versions); Social�Problems (Allyn &�Bacon); and�Down-to-Earth � Sociology: Introductory Readings�(Free Press). He has also published widely in sociology journals, including Social Problems and American Journal of Sociology.

While a graduate student, Jim Henslin taught at the University of Missouri at St. Louis. After completing his doctorate, he joined the faculty at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, where he is Professor Emeritus of Sociology. His two favorite activities are writing and traveling. He especially enjoys visiting and living in other cultures, for this brings him face to face with behaviors and ways of thinking that he cannot take for granted, experiences that “make sociological principles come alive.”

Great sociology book. Easy to follow.

Very clearly written and easy to follow,
Not sure if I'm old or if the way it's written is different for me. There's pauses and let's review to make sure you've understood what you've read. So it's great in that sense but for me it was confusing

What a ride!

Motorcycle history has added to our rich collection of American folklore and the possibilities that can occur when given the promise of freedom that a motorcycle imparts. We have long needed a book that outlines its place in our cultural make-up and I found that Legendary Motorcycles did just this. It is a feast for the eyes and mind in its rich photography and historical ponderings.

Basem Wasef crisscrossed the country, from the Bonneville Salt Flats to the flatlands of Indiana and the hometown of James Dean to bring us this valuable addition to the American motoring landscape. Motorcycles are in a class of their own for legendary stories and imaginings peopled with some real bad-boy heroes: like Fonda and his chopper, Elvis and his 'Glide, and of course, Evel Knievel.

I particularly enjoyed the commissioned photographs and historical images, and the different profiles of the bikes that have achieved legendary status. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance gets honorable mention in Chapter 25, for although its storyline is heavily reliant on the melding of philosophies, in Legendary Motorcycles we see four travel snapshots that put a face to the main characters in Robert Pirsig's book and get a glimpse of the 1964 Honda CB77 Superhawk and the Sutherland's 1968 BMW R60/2.

Readers who are especially hooked on the Harley-Davidson dialogue should check out any of Allan Girdler's books, which have been re-released! My go-tos continue to be Harley Davidson Sportster and Harley-Davidson XR-750.

Legendary Motorcycles: A Vivid History of Men and Their Machines

Legendary Motorcycles is a book that is aimed at two-wheel enthusiasts, but it will be of interest to anyone who appreciates fine machinery or even recent cultural history. The book consists of a number of short, magazine article size chapters on famous motorcycles or motorcycles that belonged to famous people. Each chapter is beautifully illustrated with images of the motorcycles today and a series of period photos of the motorcycle in action. Legendary Motorcycles is written by Basem Wasef, a Los Angeles motor sports enthusiast. The forward is by Jay Leno, a man who is truly passionate about automobiles, motorcycles, or almost anything mechanical.

In his book, Wasef has covered a wide range of motorcycles, but his subjects are drawn primarily from the last forty years, rather than from the early years of motorcycle history, so if you are interested in early board trackers, pre-war road racers or exotic 1950s Grand Prix bikes, this is not the book's focus. The single early bike and rider is the chapter on T.E. Lawrence and the Brough Superior he loved to ride and that met his death on, the superbike of its day. There are a number of chapters on the motorcycles that are perhaps most identified with a number of famous racers including AMA stars Dick Mann, Mert Lawwill and Cal Rayborn. Then, there are ones on Wayne Rainey's Kawasaki Superbike, Freddy Spencer's World Championship winning Honda and Kenny Robert's infamous TZ750 powered flat-tracker.

There are articles on the eccentric painter and pin striper, Kenneth "Van Dutch" Howard, who in death, has become what he may have wanted to be least - a pop culture figure. In reality, Van Dutch - who was someone some of my mentors grew up with in days of early hot rodding - was an alcoholic, anti-social curmudgeon. He was a brilliant pin-striper but a crusty misanthrope who happier with his motorcycles than with most people. Its important to note here that many early hot rod and sports car enthusiasts were just as passionate about motorcycles, there was always an overlap between the car and bike communities. Evel Knievel is another legendarily difficult man who is featured in the book. He was a great showman and a household name in the same era as Joe Namath and Muhammad Ali. His long jumps and broken bones helped to contribute to the daredevil image motorcyclists enjoyed.

The addiction to "salt fever" is well covered in the book with no less than four men who were obsessed with record setting on the Bonneville Salt Flat covered including Rollie Free, Marty Dickerson, Leo Payne and Burt Munro. Two of these men raced big Vincents across the "big white dyno" in Utah, one rode a Harley Davidson and the last an Indian. For a book with twenty-six profiles, this may be enough salt content to raise some reader's blood pressure.

There is a nice chapter on the late John Britten, who was without a doubt the most original thinker in motorcycle racing in the past half-century. This New Zealander deserves to have a film made about him as his countryman Burt Munro did with World's Fastest Indian. What an eccentric, free-thinking and innovative man who died far too young. There is a welcome chapter on the great Motorcycle Top Fuel Champion Terry Christenson who those of us who attended drag races in the 1970s remember for his record runs on his Nortons. Mike "The Bike" Hailwood is also here, but not curiously for his great MV Augusta or Honda Grand Prix bikes of the 1960s, but for the Ducatis he made his brief Isle of Man comeback on at the age of thirty-eight.

For chopper fans, there is an article on the motorcycles from the film Easy Rider. Though I can appreciate some of the workmanship on these extreme motorcycles, I am not generally a chopper fan. There isn't much any of them seem to do well and most of them are viewed rather than actually ridden. And, for many of us who grew up in the 1960s, outlaw bikers gave motorcyclists a poor image that it took decades to undo. However, the bikes in Easy Rider did become cultural icons, especially the chopper with the "Captian America"paint job. For film fans, James Dean's two motorcycles are covered, but his inclusion in a book about famous motorcycles seems to be a bit of a stretch. However, it's a nice thing knowing that the same people who lovingly restored the house he grew up in also have his Triumph twin.

Steve McQueen may have not been known as a famous motorcyclist if it wasn't for On Any Sunday, the classic motorcycle documentary. Bruce Brown's classic film did for motorcycles what his Endless Summer did for surfing, it showed people who were suspicious about motorcyclists that riders were normal people and that what motivated most of us was the freedom and pure joy of riding on two wheels. For better or worse, On Any Sunday helped mainstream motorcycling and those scenes of McQueen and his buddies riding on the sand left an indelible impression on thousands of young viewers. I know that the Husky from that scene has been restored in recent months by the retired motocrosser Marty Tripes. Steve McQueen had the legendary racer and stunt man Bud Ekins as a mentor and so like Ekins, McQueen developed a deep appreciation for the sport. They were true motorcyclists as they appreciated not only the modern bikes they rode and raced, but the early motorcycles they came to collect.

The inclusion of Elvis is also a questionable one. He was probably such a captive of his fame that I can't see that he would have had a lot of time or the freedom to really ride. Basketball great Michael Jordon's racing team is also an inclusion that isn't warranted. While Jordon is certainly famous, the bikes he has sponsored are not. The late Renzo Pasolini who was killed racing back in 1973, is a bit of a quizzical entry as he is probably not familiar to most of the American and British readers who will buy this book. Also, there is hardly a real identification of him with the Harley XR750 that is featured, other than the fact that he raced it and it survives in the same condition as it was raced in, a rarity for a racer.

There are not enough continental or British riders included in the book. I would have enjoyed a chapter on the legendary Giacomo Agostini and any one of his MV-Augustas. Motocross competition is also largely ignored. I would have liked to see a chapter on Bob Hannah and his Yamahas, Roger De Coster and his Suzukis or any one of the many Swedish, Finnish, British or Belgian motocross heroes. What about Bruce Penhall and his World Champion speedway bike? A chapter on the Rickman brothers of England, who not only won many races, but won on the Rickman-Metisse kit bikes they built and designed themselves would have been a natural. Curiously, there isn't a mention of McQueen's Triumph-Metisse in the chapter on the star, especially as his appreciation for the innovative British bikes was so well known. Perhaps a Part Deux is being worked on and will broaden the coverage in this volume.

Overall, the well-written and beautifully produced Legendary Motorcycles is an excellent addition to the bookshelf or coffee table of anyone who loves motorcycles or simply appreciates the history and development of the eternal combustion engine. It would be an excellent holiday gift for the motorcyclist in
your life.

About the Author
Kiril Todorov (D.Sc.) is a Professor of Industrial Management and Entrepreneurship at the University of National and World Economy (UNWE), Sofia, Bulgaria, Director of the Institute for Entrepreneurship Development, and Head of Department of Entrepreneurship at the UNWE, Chairman of the Board of the Bulgarian Association for Management Development and Entrepreneurship (BAMDE), and Vice President for Bulgaria of the European Council for Small Business (ECSB). He has specialized in Denmark, Germany, Russia, United Kingdom, Japan and other countries. He is the author of dozens of publications at home and abroad and is the leader of many national and international research and educational projects in the field of management and entrepreneurship. He has been a visiting professor at foreign universities and has extensive experience as a consultant in management and entrepreneurship development. K. Todorov has also been a keynote speaker at many international events in Switzerland, Denmark, Ireland, Brazil, Slovenia, Turkey, and Kazakhstan.

David Smallbone is Associate Director of the Small Business Research Centre at Kingston University, which he joined in 2004 from Middlesex University. He is also a visiting professor at Hubei School of Economics, Wuhan, China and at the Centre for Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Regional Development in Ventspils, Latvia. Davids research on entrepreneurship and SME development dates back to the 1980s, much of it with an applied policy focus. As a leading expert on entrepreneurship in former socialist economies, David was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Lodz in Poland for his work in this area. David has numerous publications on entrepreneurship in transition economies, among other topics. He is a Past President of the ICSB (2010-11) having previously served as President of the ECSB (2005-07). He is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Small Business Management, as well as being on the editorial boards of a number of leading entrepreneurship journals.

This novel, the American debut of a popular contemporary Japanese writer, will have a familiar ring to Western ears. The narrative moves adroitly through mystery, fable, pensive realism, and modernist absurdity to tell the tale--at least on the surface--of a Japanese man caught up in a puzzling quest for a somewhat mystical sheep. The spare style echoes Raymond Carver, Dashiell Hammett, and Raymond Chandler, with matter-of-fact absurdities reminiscent of John Irving and, in less inspired moments, Tom Robbins. While the climax of the story is somewhat unrewarding, many readers will enjoy being pulled along by the playful and engaging style and fluid structure. Interesting as an example of current Japanese writing and as an unusually hip and irreverent look at contemporary Japanese society, this would be a nice addition to larger fiction collections.

A fun, fresh, and sexy romp through the mind of a freak...

...and I use the term freak in the most reverent of ways. I also use it to describe the author; because while the main character is a freak in his own right, he's one of an entirely different caliber.

A Wild Sheep Chase takes us to Tokyo Japan 'round 1980 and dumps us into the sharp but entirely unexercised, and increasingly apathetic mind of our 30 year old (male) main character. Funny, I just checked the book because I couldn't remember his name. I couldn't find it. I may be wrong, but I don't know if the author gives him one.

Anyway...

Newly divorced, incessantly smoking, and always musing in very interesting ways about largely uninteresting things, I found myself pulled into this novel immediately. "We" soon find ourselves embroiled in an epic and supernatural mystery with only a half-tank of gas. When tasked by an uber-powerful businessman to find a certain certain one-of-a-kind sheep or face financial ruin (if not death), our adventurer shruggingly agrees, and half-heartedly pursues.

The slurring pace of this book, filled with philosophical musings, "David Lynch like" weirdos, and a spattering of phenomenon, was a rare treat for me.

Murakami is a wonderfully gifted creative writer. His prose (even though translated) is at once elegantly crafted and playful. I recommend this book highly.

dark, disturbing, delicious!

The genius of Murakami's "Wild Sheep Chase" (like the genius of his other works) is the total believability of his characters and plot. Everyone who reads this work is immediately engrossed and sucked in, and only realizes how truly bizarre the whole thing is when they try to tell someone else about the book.
The narrator of "Sheep Chase" begins as something of an Everyman. His mate leaves him, his job pays him well but isn't very satisfying, he is intelligent but little in his life seems to stimulate him to thought. You wouldn't say he is going through life with blinders on, but nor is his life totally examined, either. Life is, more or less, something that is just happening to him. You could probably think of a dozen people you know who would easily fit his character.
Still, this is a Murakami novel, after all, and pretty soon he is, in the words of Tolkein, simply swept away, a stranger in a strange land with no idea of how he got there. A perfectly ordinary photo that he uses in a brochure catches the attention of a powerful political figure, "The Boss", who has been inexplicably lying on the verge of death for some years, hanging on as if by some supernatural power. The photo, it's discovered, has a special sheep in it. A type of sheep who's breed does not exist. A minion of The Boss makes him an offer he cannot refuse: find that sheep...
He meets up with a young woman who, among other things, is a call girl for an exclusive members-only club, and does ear modeling on the side. Together, they set off to find this elusive sheep-that-doesn't-exist, all the while trailing the narrator's old friend, The Rat, who seems to always be one step ahead of them.
Much has been written about Murakami and "Wild Sheep Chase", including that this work is a shining example of the postmodern novel. While this may be the case, potential readers shouldn't shy away from this book simply because they may not know a fig about postmodernism. Unlike other "postmodern novels", which are often thickets of high rhetoric and voluminous nonsense, "Wild Sheep Chase" can be read on a multitude of levels: both as lit crit and as pure, enjoyable fiction. To read it strictly as one or the other is to do a great injustice to this work.

Another madcap inquiry into the mystery of existence...and sheep.

Murakami is an acquired taste, but fortunately he's very easily acquired. His novels are typically a mixed bag of comic absurdity, pathos, suspense, and philosophical speculation but written in a straight-ahead, colloquial style. *A Wild Sheep Chase* is no exception. Here a struggling adman ends up recruited by a mysterious client in black to find a sheep that has appeared in an insurance company advertisement our hero's firm has designed. The sheep in this ad is special...it takes over people's consciousness.

That's the least of what you need to know to understand what kind of novel *A Wild Sheep Chase* is. And yet for all its imaginative "wildness," the novel has a traditional, hardboiled-style first-person narrative that easily draws you into the story. In fact, I'd say that three-quarters of the pleasure of this novel comes from spending time with the likeable, hard-luck narrator. Witty but not a wisecracker, laid-back but no Joe Cool, fatalistic but not cynical, he's a guy who is thoroughly convinced of his mediocrity and okay with it. He's got the kind of applied equanimity to life's vicissitudes that you wish you had, taking things as they come, taking things as they go. He knows life is heading for loss and sadness, but he's not whining about it. If he's not the kind of guy you could ever be, than he's the kind of guy you wish you had for a friend--and that makes spending 350+ pages in his company a pleasurable experience. And that's a good thing because if I had one criticism about *A Wild Sheep Chase* it's that it's about 70 pages too long. In the last third of the novel, there's a lot of description of the narrator sitting around waiting for the climax to occur when it could have occurred pages and pages beforehand. Well, as I said, he's pleasant enough company so it wasn't intolerable. Still...I got a little tired of hearing what he cooked for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, how long he slept, what things he saw upon looking out the window.

And, as for the climax...well, don't expect the usual resolution in a Murakami novel. The original mystery--or what seemed to be the original mystery at the start--has a way of shifting around to become something else entirely. It's the kind of mystery where the search becomes even more important than the answer and the answer is often left open to a good deal of reader interpretation. In this instance, however, things seem even more obscure than usual and I found the resolution of the novel unnecessarily muddied. In a novel that depends a lot on chance, coincidence, and the arbitrary, the pay-off struck me as a little too much dependent on all of these. Perhaps something was lost in the translation from the Japanese, but I found the ending of *A Wild Sheep Chase* rather unsatisfying.

These caveats aside, Murakami is more than just a mystery writer. With his reality-bending plots, ambiguity, and philosophical questioning, he is a genuinely thought-provoking literary artist and a *A Wild Sheep Chase* is an ultimately intriguing, rewarding, and, perhaps most of all, fun read.

Fun, ears recipes to make with your kids!

All of the recipes appear to be easy to prepare with your children. I love that Debbie included recipes for the homemade sauces. Some of the recipes that call for a homemade sauce does not indicate the quantity. I guess if you are a seasoned cook you can figure it out. Over all a great book with easy recipes. I would recommend this book to anyone who has children at home and are interested in learning to cook.

I loved that everything was simple to make.
Two things turned me off about this book though. Not all of the recipes had measurements. An experienced cook can wing it but some people really need those measurements. Also, white sauce was mentioned but a recipe was never given. Same as before some people need that. Neither if these things affected me but its something that should be reviewed.

I read a lot of Kindle books. In my opinion, two of the most important features that a good Kindle recipe book needs to have are: 1. a an active table of contents 2. Good illustrations or images. This casserole recipe book has both of these important aspects. This book is well written. It is also well worth the little that it costs.

Convincing, but ultimately a sham

TL;DR: Read this website: http://www.johntreed.com/Kiyosaki.html and you will see why Robert Kiyosaki is not a good resource on personal wealth management. This whole "Rich Dad Poor Dad" debacle is, however, a great lesson in detecting garbage advice-giving companies that are only out for their own self-interests.

I think it should be concerning to potential buyers that most of the recent 5-star reviews are overly short, vague, and look likely to have been solicited to artificially improve this book's rating. I have no proof of this, but it is suspicious.

In any event, I can see why people are drawn into this book and the Rich Dad company that Robert Kiyosaki has built for himself. I consider myself financially savvy, and even I found myself drawn into his works. The general ideas sounded great, and lined up nicely with what I have been learning over the years in teaching myself how to manage my money. Additionally, the whole book is given a great big vote of confidence by "rich dad," Kiyosaki's personal financial advisor and super-successful father to his childhood friend.

The problem is, there is no rich dad. Everything about how Kiyosaki had this childhood mentor who taught him all these great life lessons about personal wealth is a work of fantasy. Here is an exact quote from Kiyosaki himself when pressed by SmartMoney Magazine about who rich dad really was: "Is Harry Potter real? Why don’t you let Rich Dad be a myth, like Harry Potter?" He boasts of several major real estate flips of which there are no public records. He also claims to buy the majority of small companies right before their share price sky rockets, then makes big money on the proceeds. Except, anyone that owns more than 5% of any publicly traded company is required to report the sale to the SEC. Kiyosaki's name is not on any of these reports. There is also a large pile of evidence that Kiyosaki became wealthy only after this book and his subsequent line of financial-advice products became best-sellers. To be sure, that is one way to get rich, but it is notably absent from the rest of his "profound" advice.

Admittedly, he does have some good points. Ones that I personally think are worth remembering for anyone trying to build their personal wealth are: Learn how to make your money work for you through wise investments, understand your tax obligations and ways to (legally!) reduce your tax liability, failure is all part of the process, and school (and a sad number of parents) will leave you woefully unprepared to manage your personal finances so you'll have to learn about this area of your life on your own. That last sentence is pretty much all that can be gleaned from this book, and all of it you'd probably figure out on your own anyway.

There are much better resources on Amazon and elsewhere that can teach you about money management from authors that actually built their wealth instead of selling you a bunch of false promises.

Inaccurate, misleading, unsubstantiated and weird.

This book is utterly, utterly ridiculous. It tells you absolutely nothing useful but is full of bizarre unsubstantiated theories about the world. I suppose self help books tend to be like that. But I'd expected a bit more given that this one is so highly recommended by people.

This book has changed my life, I have lost my fear and greed (desire) and WILL put these ideas into action, I will continue to learn, study and will invest a lot more into myself, my only problem and my only solution.

I've seen this book get a one star rating, I can't understand why, if you truly 'open (change) your mind' understand the concepts being presented, you will know what he is saying is right. But if you are like everyone else, you will resist change, complain that it was a waste of time and stay doing what you are doing, and expecting a different outcome, which is the definition of - Insanity.
