Pamela Serure was a highly successful but burned-out executive when mysterious stress-related ailments including stomach pains, severe headaches, memory loss, and seizures landed her in the hospital. The doctors couldn't find anything wrong with her. Addicted to painkillers and fearing for her life, she looked to alternative medicine for help. a great beginner's book on juice fasting

This book gives the reader the opportunity to have a little bit of everything. In addition to a structured and detailed fast, Serure provides the reader with many different exercises to invigorate, soothe, and release the spiritual and emotional selves, as well as the physical. The only criticisms would be that at times, it was necessary to hunt through the book for a certain piece of information (e.g. finding out when it's best to take apple cider vinegar), thus giving the book a disorganized feeling. Also, although Serure mentions many things, she fails to give details on how one might find out more if desired (e.g. mentioning longer fasts are better in the beginning of the season, but not giving any advice or recommendations on longer fasts). Lastly, as a beginner with fasting myself, I went through the program carefully, following every detail as closely as possible. It would have been helpful if Serure had given some general lists of substitutes or things that are acceptable to put in the juice/broth. Otherwise, this book was wonderful. It leads the reader gently through a brief juice fast with not only the necessary plans and details, but enough information to excite and inspire anyone to improve lifestyle and eating habits.

Not just about fasting

If you are a beginner like myself, this book may not give you everything you're looking for... There is a lot of information about fasting and fairly detailed guidelines on how to do a fast, but there is also a large amount of info about spiritual healing and other subjects that kind of turned me off. The information was a bit confusing for me to sort through (not well organized). I was looking for more of a text book and this is more like a chicken-soup-for-the-faster kind of book. I found a little bit more science in Paavo Airola's books as well as some helpful info in a pamphlet on cleansing that I got from one of the Wild Oats chain supermarkets. For some general information and one of many daily guides to a short fast this is an ok book, but if you're looking for more hard facts or need more instruction, I would check this out at the library, and use it as a supplement to other more focused books.

I am very impressed with the book, it is easy to read, and explains clearly the material of how to jump-start your life to a healthy and happy lifestyle. The fasting is the easiest and tastiest I have ever done. I put Pamela on the top of my list, she is truly a wonderful and caring women. Interesting but not captivating

The Gentle Giants of Ganymede is a sequel to Inherit the Stars. It isn't necessary to read the first novel to understand the second, but doing so would give the reader a fuller appreciation of the characters and setting in the second novel. The plots of the two novels, however, are only loosely connected; it would be easy to follow the story in Gentle Giants without reading Inherit the Stars. If you haven't read Inherit the Stars, however, I would recommend doing so. It is a better novel than Gentle Giants.

The "Gentle Giants" to which the title refers appear in Inherit the Stars only as a long dead (or at least long absent) race that once lived on a planet in our solar system (Minerva) that was destroyed in the distant past (the mystery surrounding Minerva's destruction is the force driving Inherit the Stars). A starship of the long-lost Giants returns to the solar system after an extended journey ... one that would take 25 million years if the effects of relativity were ignored. The Giants woefully discover that Minerva is gone and make reluctant contact with the new kids in the solar system: a species known as humans.

The first half of the novel generates some energy despite its tendency to turn into a series of science lectures, primarily focused on how the Giants manage to control gravity. An unfortunate tendency of some "hard" sf authors is to elevate Great Ideas above story or character development, and James Hogan succumbed to that temptation in this novel -- much more than he did in Inherit the Stars. The novel's second half, after First Contact is made, tends to fizzle out altogether. The story leads up to a plot twist that is probably supposed to leave the reader gasping with surprise, but it's not all that surprising and ultimately amounts to just another Great Idea. There is little human (or alien) drama in the story; it's interesting, in its own way, but not captivating.

Inherit the Stars maintained a strong sense of mystery that is absent from the sequel. While the two main characters from Inherit the Stars return in Giants, they play a relatively small role. A computer called ZORAC, responsible for translating communications between humans and the Giants, has more personality than any of the human characters. The Giants are more intriguing (they abhor conflict and value cooperation) but by the novel's second half, they are relegated to the status of tourists -- and who really wants to read about tourists? Ultimately, although the novel has its moments, it doesn't have enough of them to sustain a sense of wonder. Diehard fans of hard sf might enjoy it -- it isn't by any means a bad novel -- but it just isn't in the same league as Inherit the Stars.

Good Sequel

I'm glad Hogan wrote this story. Inherit the Stars is on my top 10 favorites list, and after reading it I wanted more, and that's just what Hogan does in this 1978 sequel (second in a series). It takes off where the first novel ended and continues to challenge and explore accepted concepts of humankind. Hogan does what a Sci-Fi writer (or any writer for that matter) is supposed to do -- he takes an idea and pushes it outside the envelope. With science fiction, he doesn't just rehash a fantasy about aliens that's merely based on old familiar plots set in the future, what he does is actually push beyond what we accept as current science and beliefs and creates a plausible world and race. His aliens are unique, as only they should be, because they evolved in a different environment from Earth. Hogans characters combined with his creativity and knowledge of the aerospace industry add up to a good yarn. I wish the editors and publishers of modern Sci-Fi books and magazines would take notice of good Sci-Fi writers like Hogan.

Starts well, but runs out of steam

I enjoyed Mr. Hogan’s first novel (Inherit the Stars), and this starts out as a worthy successor. However, the narrative uniqueness that worked so well in the first book fails to deliver in the sequel. The first in the Giants series was an interesting take on scientific method: a fantastic way to engage in world-building (especially when one of those worlds is our own), and a great way to keep pace and interest. However, there comes a point when something has to happen – and when that point occurs about halfway through “Giants,” the novel fails to deliver. This is not meant to take anything away from the other readers who clearly enjoyed this book in its entirety; it just didn’t work for me.

As with Inherit the Stars, our primary protagonists, Danchekker and Hunt begin by putting together the pieces of a biological, historical, and astronomical puzzle. Their efforts are aided when the subjects of their inquiry mysteriously show up after millions of years of travel through time-dilated space. This is where the novel gets lazy – instead of a launch-pad for a plot that has all of space and time at its disposal, “Giants” gives us a MASSIVE coincidence of timing, a computer that can answer all the protagonists’ questions (the deus deorum ex machina, if you will) , and one of the most tepid First Contact sequences I’ve ever seen. Hogan’s scientific chops are such that the novel is still filled with more interesting concepts than a typical author can cram into a series (e.g. the origins of aggression as a response to cardiopulmonary evolution, etc.), but the narrative urgency fades once we see nothing really interesting will happen.

I wanted to enjoy it, and I did enjoy about half…but then the book simply ran out of steam for me. I don’t know whether or not it is worth your time to continue on to the third volume in the series, but I have personally tapped out my interest in Mr. Hogan’s style. At this point in time, it feels a little like the Endeavor/Morse series on Masterpiece Mystery – vaguely engaging if you have nothing else to do, but certainly not something you would sacrifice a lot of time to sit through if you had a choice.

Grab a cup of coffee or three and join the author of this delightful book for a zippy crash course on the basic skills needed to develop 3D games for iOS devices. A wide variety of information is presented in this challenging, yet approachable book. Topics include an introduction to the 3D tree, cameras, lighting, object creation, collision detection, animations, touch-based interactions, and so much more. This book has all the right stuff take your skills and creativity to the next level.

There’s just enough information in each section to understand what’s going on before diving straight ahead into hands-on tutorials. These directed walk-throughs are designed to give readers the skills they need to become the next generation of rock star 3D developers and it really works!

This book is ideal for developers who already have a background in programming and a familiarity with 3D software written in other languages. However, newbies beware! The book does a good job of presenting a lot of information in a friendly, entertaining manner, but it races through the basics. There is no time wasted on discussions of Swift syntax, code styling, or program design. The focus of this quick read is on 3D programming and it stays true to focus without wondering off unnecessarily into tangential or supporting topics.

Although I have a strong programming background and have programmed 3D scenes in other languages, I decided to read this new (and exciting) text from cover to cover before attempting any of the code examples. Here’s what I discovered in the process:

All four games rely on an external game object, built by the author and included with the book, to function. This approach offers pros and cons. First, many fundamental parts of the game play, such as keeping track of the score or loading sounds, are not directly shown in the code. The functionality is included in the downloadable software, but is only included indirectly in the code descriptions.

This strategy allows readers to focus on the specifics of the training, but obfuscates the actual game play logic – which again may negatively impact the beginners trying to claw their way up this mountain. On a very positive note, the source code included with this book can be modified and/or used in as many games as needed without even acknowledging the book. Oh yeah! That’s awesome. I love reusable code! But why not throw an acknowledgement in their way, huh? They deserve a pat on the back or wink the next time you attempt to lick your elbow.

Organizationally, the book is pretty good. The author recognizes the need for conceptual knowledge such as lighting models, orthographic projections, and texture maps, and does a reasonable job of explaining most background concepts. On several occasions the presentation of the background concepts and the technical implementations got pretty mixed up and left me feeling a bit dizzy, but I am sure the forum can straighten thing out for any coders out there like myself.

In summary, the book could benefit from more editing, a bit of design discussion, and some extra attention to basics, but overall It's a great addition to any iOS reference library. I really enjoyed the silly comments and light-hearted language. The text took me from having no familiarity with 3D design in XCode to feeling like I could champion the next 3D mega hit in one week – and that’s no small task. . Great work!

Second installment by GQ columnist Mayle of his country life in the Provencal region of southern France, following the delightful A Year in Provence (1990). Mayle, as keen and sunny an entertainer as ever, tells of French medicine, the drolleries of a French liver crisis, and the difficulties of trying to fill a prescription when an American visitor with mononucleosis needs a state-of-the-art antibiotic on Sunday. He reviews his mail, the new celebrity brought to him as the local English writer, his wife's gradual cooling toward visitors (pretty blondes make her snappish), and a signing at a Cannes bookstore during the film festival. Mayle gets much mileage out of his wife, whose Frenchified rationality makes her head of the household; she arranges birthday picnics, social occasions--and adores stray dogs. He checks out a choir of toads that may, through electronic rechanneling, sing La Marseillaise. He attends a combined wine-tasting and fabulous country meal that leaves him stuffed and unconscious. We go with him on a secret truffle buy as he hustles two kilos of smelly contraband from the French countryside to Heathrow in London. We dig up gold napoleons in his rose garden and sweep the premises with a metal detector; sit through a knockout Pavarotti concert in a 2,000-year-old outdoor Roman amphitheater while the tenor eats dinner offstage between arias. Mayle spends an evening researching varieties of pastis, an anise and licorice aperitif, two drinks of which will twist your nose; and finds his scholarly and detached attitude smoothly numbed. I knew we were in trouble when Mayle's sequel to his delightful "Year in Provence" opened with vignettes on constipation and suppositories. Oh, Mayle's fresh and breezy style is here, and he still has an eye for small but telling details, but this is mainly a retread of the same ground he worked in the much more cohesive "Year in Provence." We are told, yet again, about annoying guests, fraud in the truffle trade, and the arrogance of outsiders who are invading Provence and turning it into a playground for the rich, which is rich coming from a man who has plenty of money to finance his enviable lifestyle and quests to discover the origins of pastis!

All that said, Mayle has a talent for evoking place, and his descriptions of memorable meals will leave you salivating. But you can get all that, in better form, in A Year in Provence.

Simply delightful!

Now this is a book to take in the car! Mayle returns to Provence and, unconfined by his self-imposed chronological organization of A Year in Provence, which went month-by-month, produces a delightful, anecdotal account of life in his adopted country. We get to hear about singing frogs, an attempt to train a Vietnamese pot-bellied pig to hunt truffles, as well as various wine-tasting festivities, and particularly a special party for Mayle's birthday that changes his mind about picnics once and for all.
It's a delightful book, great for listening to in the car and almost certainly an entertaining light read.

I love Jim hollis and now, the estimable Sounds True has recorded several hours of Mr. Hollis on the inner life at mid-life. I'm a huge fan of Hollis' and it's great to be able to hear his voice. This is NOT a book on tape, but rather, a series of personal, deeply felt talks. Highly recommended.

He has such clarity and can speak from such a deep place of understanding.
His tapes are like sitting in a comfortable room, gently viewing the soul of mankind,
my own soul, its beauties and its fears and deciding its well worth the journey.

As I work though these incredible CD's, I can say with great certainty that this is among the most important information I've ever heard in my life. As James Hollis so eloquently elucidates, unless we truly understand ourselves and what is always subconsciously motivating our behavior, truly we are lost in the dark woods: wondering why we are repeating the same disappointing or destructive behaviors over and over, often contrary to our best intentions. The reason is that there are powerful, and often elusive forces at work in the psyche... things that herald back to our deepest emotional impressions in childhood, much of which may be repressed or forgotten. Perhaps it is only when we reach the crisis of middle age (not necessarily a chronological event, as he explains, but often is) that our subconscious "summons" us (to use Dr. Hollis' term) with "symptomatology" (such as depressions, anxiety, dissatisfaction with our relationships/careers/lives, etc) that we can no longer ignore or deny. Perhaps some of us will be "lucky" enough to sidestep this crisis in later life, but I suspect many of us will not. For those of us who cannot or will not sidestep it, Dr. Hollis' work provides an extremely coherent and powerful roadmap to navigating this thorny and dark road through the woods of the psyche. As Jung once said, whatever is not made conscious often appears outwardly as fate. I can't recommend this CD series enough. Buy it, you won't regret it!

Twentieth century French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre maintained one value supreme above all others – freedom. This being the case, is it any surprise Sartre places freedom front and center when addressing literature’s connection with existentialism? Below are quotes from the second of this three part book, a part entitled ‘Why Write?” along with my comments:

“With each of our acts the world reveals a new face.” ---------- By this statement Sartre emphasizes a prime reason for artistic creation: the need artists and writers have to feel they are essential in relationship to the world, that is, through their writing or painting the world is revealed in unique and important ways. Literature places a distinctively human stamp on the world and with each new painting or book another valuable, vital stamp is added. I think we can all agree the world would be smaller and poorer without, to name just several, Virginia Woolf and Leo Tolstoy, R. K. Narayan and Raymond Chandler, Anne Tyler, Philip K. Dick and Shusaku Endo.

“It is the conjoint effort of author and reader which brings upon the scene that concrete and imaginary object which is the work of the mind. There is no art except for and by others. Raskolnikov’s waiting is my waiting which I lend him. Without this impatience of the reader he would remain only a collection of signs.” ---------- I really appreciate Sartre on this point: readers awaken the words and sentences on the page, inventing and completing characters and scenes with their own feelings, emotions, ideas, intuitions and past experiences. Thusly, the work of art is rounded out, made whole and complete by a community of readers. Harry Haller receives a new, more expanded life each time I reread Hesse’s novel “Steppenwolf”.

I suspect a reader could spend an entire lifetime rereading this novel and discover new, deeper dimensions and meaning with each successive study. There are a number of novels I have reread multiple times, “The Stranger” and “Siddhartha” come immediately to mind and this has certainly been my experience – I have never reached the bottom; there is always more to learn and appreciate.

“And since this directed creation is an absolute beginning, it is therefore brought about by the freedom of the reader, and by what is purest in that freedom. Thus, the writer appeals to the reader’s freedom to collaborate in the production of his work. The book does not serve me freedom, it requires it.” ---------- Sartre underscores how we are required to bring our freedom to our reading. On important aspect of freedom is openness of mind. If we find ourselves disinclined to read a novel by an author with a different sexual orientation or cultural background then ourselves, for example a novel like “Season of Migration to the North” by the Sudanese author Tayeb Salih where he explores cultural confrontation and racism, we might want to reflect on exactly how open-minded and free we really are.

“The characteristic of aesthetic consciousness is to be a belief by means of an engagement, by oath, a belief sustained by fidelity in one’s self and to the author, a perpetually renewed choice to believe. I can awaken at every moment, as I know it: but I do not want to: reading is a free dream.” ---------- Reading is a generosity, a giving oneself completely to a character and story, a gift to the writer. We can have mixed feeling reading an unsettling work, say a story of a child experiencing the horrors of war in a novel like Jerzy Kosinski’s “The Painted Bird” or a Thomas Ligotti tale of terror, but we keep turning the pages, keeping our free dream alive since we value our readerly commitment and engagement.

“The work can be defined as an imaginary presentation of the world insofar as it demands human freedom. The result of which is that there is no “gloomy literature”, since, however dark may be the colors in which one paints the world, he paints it only so that free men may feel their freedom as they face it. Above all, the unique point of view from which the author can present the world to those freedoms whose concurrence he wishes to bring about is that of a world to be impregnated always with more freedom. ---------- Is there ever enough freedom in the world? Sartre thinks there is always room for more freedom – thus, more literature, more books.

Final note: I have cited works of fiction since, for the most part, Sartre uses fiction as examples throughout his book (Sartre famously disliked poetry). However, when he speaks of literature, not only is Sartre referring to novels and stories but other types of creative writing such as poetry, plays, essays and, yes, reviews.

By and large, surgeons in these countries continue to treat mandibular fractures by intermaxillary fixation, possibly supplemented by the use of interosseous wires. Many recent edi� tions of surgical texts confirm this. Lately, however, there appears to be a surge of interest in methods of functionally stable internaI fixation, especially in the United States of America, and AO/ ASIF instruction courses are increasingly in demand. This book is intended to aid course participants in their lessons and practi� cal exercises and also to guide the clinical practitioner in the application of AO/ ASIF principles.
