Disappointing

This is a small collection of articles on JKD by Black Belt Magazine. There are a couple of decent articles in this bunch, but you'd think with all the years Black Belt has been publishing they could have found better material to include in this book. If you're interested in JKD, I think your money is better spent on Tommy Gong's book.

About the Author
Juggi Bhasin, one of the first television journalists in India joined Doordarshan News in 1987. He covered, extensively, the beginning of the insurgencies in Srinagar. Juggi was probably the only journalist to get the footage of the demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1992. He has researched extensively for this book by drawing on his own experiences as well as those of others.

An Exciting Ride, from Start to Finish

I grew up with the author in New Delhi, and we were close friends. I have not seen him in about 30 years, but I remember him like yesterday. I started reading this book, frankly because it had been written by a friend, but I finished reading it, because I could not put it down. He develops two strong characters, Suvir, in the Indian Army, and Murad, a computer engineer forced to become a terrorist by circumstances. The deep study of both these characters reminded me of the Jason Bourne series. There are layers upon layers of experiences and events that lead to these characters makeup. It is supposed to be a work of fiction, but it gave me a better understanding of the current relationships between India and Pakistan. I have been away from India for many years, but the book transported me into the middle of modern day India, with all its conflicts and glory. The final conflagration ends with a crescendo, a deserving finale to this exciting book. Awesome!

Clear, concise, and useful!

This is a great book for anyone looking to add structure and logic to their addiction counseling practice. The book is well written and well organized. The language is easy to understand, and the concepts are useful. I particularly found the section on BSGS (Building Session Goals and Strategies) helpful. Dr. Y. takes an organized and thoughtful approach to what is often a chaotic and drama filled discipline. This a great book if you are looking to take a proactive and not reactive approach to counseling.

This book will help you learn how to interact with clients, families and co-workers in the field of substance abuse. At the end of each chapter there are helpful exercises to complete (with or without a partner) to help you get a better understanding of the topic and how to deal with a client who is at different stages of recovery or treatment. Another great feature is that it is small and light but compact with useful, professional information.

Professor Greiner is the author of numerous publications on the subjects of organization growth and development, management consulting, and strategic change. Among his many articles is the Harvard Business Review article, AEvolution and Revolution as Organizations Grow, A which was recently reprinted in 1998 by the Harvard Business Review as an all time classic. In 1999, he and Professor Arvind Bhambri won the McKinsey Prize from the Strategic Management Society for their paper on "New CEOs and Strategic Change. Across Industries." His books include Power and Organization Development (with Dr. Virginia Schein), published by Addison-Wesley, Consulting to Management (with Dr. Robert Metzger), published by Prentice-Hall.
Professor Greiner has acted as a consultant to many companies and government agencies in the U.S. and abroad, including Coca Cola, Pacific Bell, Olivetti, Merck, Times-Mirror, Red Lion Hotels, U.S. Forest Service, Internal Revenue Service, Cadence Design Systems, ChipSoft, Korn/Ferry International, Andersen Consulting, KinderCare, Health Systems International, Kohlberg, Kravis and Roberts, and American Golf Corporation.

A practical tool kit for the trustee beneficiary relationship

There are very few books that can be found that explain the trustee beneficiary relationship in terms that can be easily followed by readers who are not lawyers or otherwise involved as professionals in the trust industry. This is one of the few and that fact alone will make this a special and popular book. In theory it is often said that trusts are a relationship but what does that mean and how do you ensure that it is a good relationship? You could almost go as far as saying that Family Trusts, a Guide is a "relationship tool book" that aims to point the way to good relationships in the trust context and provides very practical actionable exercises and approaches. Because of this I actually see this as also being a book about the topic of family governance, because the relationship tools that it provides can be used in other situations where family members have to work with each other. Another area where the book is very up to date with international trusts practice is that it does talk in detail about the protector role and has useful suggestions on how to think about protectors. The discussion of the distribution function in trusts is new and innovative. I recommend the book to international readers who are involved in the structuring, & administration of trusts, as well as for trust settlors, beneficiaries and protectors, and of course trustees and trust officers.

About the Author
Hannnah Arendt (1906-1975) was for many years University Professor of Political Philosophy in the Graduate Faculty of the New School for Social Research and a Visiting Fellow of the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago. She is also the author of Eichmann in Jerusalem, On Revolution, and Between Past and Future (all available from Penguin Twentieth-Century Classics).

Peter Baehr teaches in the department of politics and sociology at Lingnan University in Hong Kong.

Superb introduction to a great mind.

Hannah Arendt (1906-1975) was one of the great thinkers of the twentieth century. She was equally at home in philosophy, political theory, and history, and blended all three disciplines in her pursuit of integrity in political thought and action. This fine book is perhaps the single best place to begin to get to know her thought and work. The introduction is first-rate -- clear, accessible, yet intellectually rigorous, respectful of Arendt while critical. The choices of readings -- both complete and self-contained essays and extracts from larger books such as ORIGINS OF TOTALITARIANISM, EICHMANN IN JERUSALEM, and ON REVOLUTION -- are excellent. The annotations don't get in the way and are of much aid to the reader. The bibliography of works by and about Arendt is excellent. All in all, this is a superb addition to the VIKING PORTABLE series.

An excellent resource for both old and new readers of Arendt

Although this volume intends to introduce Arendt to new readers, those familiar with her writings will find some choice morsels scattered among the excerpts from her better-known works. Of these, I particularly enjoyed her analysis of enforced segregation, her startling letter to Gershom Scholem (in which she responds to his criticisms of EICHMAN IN JERUSALEM), and her conception of a wartime (World War Two, that is) Jewish army. After reading these and other pieces, you will, I think, understand why so many hail her as a truly monumental figure: a scholar who was at home in journalism, a critic of totalitarianism who was no leftist, a supporter of Israel who did not hesitate to address its flaws, a political philosopher who balked at that label.

Includes Hannah Arendt's Clarification of Her Assessment of the JUDENRATs (Jewish Councils Under the Nazis)

Hannah Arendt covers many topics in this volume [Review based on 2000 Edition]. This includes various political philosophies and philosophers, the history of German Jews, the unfolding Holocaust, the similarities between Soviet Communism and German Nazism, and much more. She believes that government-forced racial desegregation in the USA violates the freedom of association. She compares it to forcing Jews in Jewish-only vacation resorts to associate with non-Jews. (p. 238).

Arendt is most remembered for her analysis of the Eichmann trial, and this book contains an extract from her EICHMANN IN JERUSALEM, including her unsparing criticism of the JUDENRATs (JUDENRAETE). (pp. 348-on). Editor Peter Baehr describes the furious reaction of part of the Jewish community to Arend't conclusions. For instance, the ADL (Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith) issued condemnatory memorandums of her. (p. xxvi).

In a 1963 letter to Gershom Scholem, Hannah Arendt defended her condemnation of the Jewish Councils, and rejected the argument that the desperate situation facing Jews exculpated their collaboration with the Nazis against other Jews. She wrote, (quote) I have made my own position plain, and yet it is obvious that you do not understand it. I said that there was no possibility of resistance, but there existed the possibility of DOING NOTHING. And in order to do nothing, one did not need to be a saint, one needed only to say: "I am just a simple Jew, and I have no desire to play any other role." Whether these people or some of them, as you indicate, deserved to be hanged is an altogether different question. What needs to be discussed are not the people so much as the arguments with which they justified themselves in their own eyes and in those of others. Concerning these arguments, we are entitled to pass judgment. Moreover, we should not forget that we are dealing here with conditions which were terrible and desperate enough, but which were not the conditions of concentration camps. These decisions were made in an atmosphere to terror but not under the immediate pressure and impact of terror. These are important differences in degree, which every student of totalitarianism must know and take into account. These people had still a certain, limited freedom of decision and of action. Just as the SS murderers also possessed, as we now know, a limited choice of alternatives. (unquote). (p. 394; Emphasis is Arendt's).

Basic, Good for the Average Person

I think this would be most helpful to people who have little knowledge of mental health and cannot afford professional help. Maybe the newer editions have been updated significantly, but as someone who knows quite a bit about psychology and self-help, this was more of a reminder than new information.
