Cut: The true story of an abandoned, abused little girl who was desperate to be part of a family, by Cathy Glass

Million-copy bestselling author Cathy Glass tells the story of Dawn, a sweet and seemingly well-balanced girl whose outward appearance masks a traumatic childhood of suffering at the hands of the very people who should have cared for her.

Dawn was the first girl Cathy Glass ever fostered. Sweet and seemingly well balanced girl, Dawn’s outward appearance masked a traumatic childhood so awful, that even she could not remember it.

During the first night, Cathy awoke to see Dawn looming above Cathy’s baby’s cot, her eyes staring and blank. She sleepwalks – which Cathy learns is often a manifestation in disturbed children. It becomes a regular and frightening occurrence, and Cathy is horrified to find Dawn lighting a match whilst mumbling it’s not my fault in her sleep one night.

Cathy discovers Dawn is playing truant from school, and struggling to make friends. More worryingly she finds her room empty one night, and her pillow covered in blood. Dawn has been self-harming in order to release the pain of her past.

When Dawn attempts suicide, Cathy realises that she needs more help than she can give. Dawn’s mother eventually confides in her that Dawn was sent away to live with relatives in Ireland between the ages of 5 and 9, and Cathy soon realises that the horrors Dawn was exposed to during this time have left her a very disturbed little girl.

Cathy Glass's "Cut"
By Gretchen Stull
A story that is hard to read (in terms of subject matter), and yet worth the effort. Dawn is the second child Cathy Glass and her husband fostered, and she's a very disturbed girl. Rejected by her parents and running from secrets she believes are too horrible to redeem, Dawn is broken and lost. At 13 she stays out all night, drinks, cuts herself, skips school, and attempts suicide more than once. But she can also be a pleasant and agreeable child who shows affection and seeks the approval of her caregivers.

This story is easy to read in terms of language choice and narrative flow, and difficult in terms of subject matter. Seeing Dawn's story unfold and feeling Cathy's love, concern, frustration, and despair provides a visceral, moving experience. I felt for Cathy, sympathizing with her desire to provide Dawn the loving, stable environment the girl desperately needed, but unable to overcome a broken system and even more broken girl. I was frustrated for her, John, and Barbara. I felt each of them wanted what was best for Dawn, even Barbara, in her own flawed way. But the system, meant to help threatened and disadvantaged children, seemed to do more harm than good. My heart broke for Dawn, and the more Cathy revealed about her past, the more I hoped she would somehow be able to turn it all around and claim the happy life she deserved.

While I enjoyed the story a great deal, I can only give 4 stars because I felt Glass occasionally went into far too much detail. There's a fine line between providing enough detail to orient the reader fully within with story, and too much detail. I felt a number of the instances of "I did this, followed by this, followed by this" neither advanced the plot nor revealed necessary information about the people involved. I found there were passages I wanted to skip just to get back to the plot, and that was discouraging.

look into foster care
By A. Starkey
Having been a foster parent in the United States, I can relate to Cathy's portrayal of how social workers "dump" teens on unsuspecting caregivers without telling the whole story, and how they ignore the possible harm that can come to your own children. In addition, she details how frequently the demands of the teen is considered more important than the normal houserules of the foster parents.

Cut is a story of one teen who has extremely serious issues that is placed with Cathy, who has a newborn of her own. The social worker REFUSES to allow any disclosurwe of the true events that caused her to come into the system in the first place, and basically allows the teen to make up her own rules such as being allowed to be out for periods where she does not have to account for her whereabouts.

Although some of the problems have recently been resolved (dumping kids without proper background information}, the overworked social workers who have to find homes for unwanted children in a system that is already overloaded and understaffed still exists.

In "Cut," Cathy tells the story of one 13 year old who had a past that created such severe problems in her that the child could be considered unsafe in a "normal" home. The way Cathy and her husband stuck it out and worked with this child is amazing. Cathy does an amazing job of telling the story in such a way that the reader can feel the severe pressure of all involved - the family, the child, the social workers, etc.

All of Cathy's books should be read by anyone considering becoming a foster parent, because they allow readers to see the dedication that is required, how they may have to fight "the system," and finally, how those who can handle the stress can help a child turn their lives around.

Well Written!
By Witty-Mom
Certainly a book that makes you pause and look at troubled teenagers through a different set of lenses. "Cut" is not only well written, it is completely engrossing. You will cry, laugh, and learn to love along with Cathy as she tries desperately to parent Dawn. A great read!

Offshoring, by John Urry

The concealment of income, wealth and profits in tax havens has brought the topic of offshoring into public debate, but as John Urry shows in this important new book offshoring is a much more pervasive feature of contemporary societies. These often secretive activities offshore also involve relations of work, finance, pleasure, waste, energy and security. Powerful and pervasive offshore worlds have been generated, posing huge challenges both for governments and for citizens.

This book documents the various patterns of offshoring of the economy, sociability, politics and the environment. In each case, offshoring generates new patterns of power, reduces the responsibilities of the powerful 'offshore class', and limits the conditions for democratic governance. Offshore, out of sight, over the horizon are some of the troubling processes and metaphors by which much life has been rendered opaque and dependent upon secrets and lies. By analysing these patterns and processes, Urry sheds fresh light on the hidden worlds of offshoring and exposes the dark side of globalization.

The book concludes by considering whether offshoring can be reversed whether it is possible to bring about the systematic ‘reshoring’ of relations that would be good for democracy and for developing low-carbon futures. Urry portrays the coming century as being poised between even more extreme offshoring and various endeavours to bring back 'home' that which has currently escaped 'over the horizon'.

Review

"An informative accounting of the consequences of an offshoring world and an impassioned critique of the offshored condition."
Theory, Culture & Society

"Offshoring shines a light on yet another of the shadowy realms upon which contemporary capitalist normalities rest."
Times Higher Education

"Urry writes with clarity and offers very useful examples to explain points.I would strongly recommend this book for teachers to purchase copies to be placed in their school/college/department libraries so that students can pursue the negative side of Globalisation in detail and be aware of lots of contemporary examples."
The Sociology Teacher

''Exposing capitalism’s expanding economy of secrecy, John Urry reveals a terrifying picture of catastrophes waiting to happen, of global inequalities difficult to comprehend, and of human rights violations on an appalling scale. Sociology at its best, warning us of the worst. Offshoring should be required reading for all undergraduates.''
Michael Burawoy, University of California, Berkeley

''This is one point of John Urry’s thought provoking book: the outside suggested by the concept of ‘offshoring’ no longer exists. Therefore politics of offshoring today are simultaneously domestic and global. And like Urry so excitingly does we have to ask: how can the ‘outsourced’ citizen of the world be included in decisions which affect their survival?''
Ulrich Beck, University of Munich

An excellent discussion of a major economic problem
By Robert Moore
This is an important study of one of the most pressing economic problems in the world today: offshoring everything from manufacturing to service centers to corporate headquarters. It is a system that enriches the upper hierarchy of companies, whether corporate officers or major shareolders, while removing middle class jobs in developed countries and replacing them with lower paying jobs in third world countries, while doing profound harm to the tax structure of the nations losing the corporations and jobs.

I can't recommend Urry's book strongly enough, even as I despair of any short term solution to the economic problems in the world's advanced countries. At the heart of things is an unwillingness to engage in any personal sacrifice for the same of society at large. For instance, the most damaging myth plaguing society at the moment is that cutting taxes is a good thing and raising taxes is a bad thing. This is closely allied with the equally pernicious myth that the private sector can accomplish tasks for society as a whole more efficiently than can the public second; i.e., that corporations - which exist to make a profit - are more efficient than governments at handling those same tasks (little evidence exists apart from ideological propaganda to support the pro-private sector assertion). With governments - especially federal and state governments in the United States - in need of additional funds, quality in life in the US and other nations continues to decline.

I do believe that at some point people will become fed up with the panoply of truly awful economic ideas that has cause for sustained low economic growth, rapid growth in economic inequality, and failure of governments to provide long term economic stimulus (and despite the rhetoric, economic stimulus comes from government encouraging the private sector to engage in spending on large projects ) will eventually create demand for radical changes. It isn't enough that nearly 40 years of trickle down economic theories that advocate large tax cuts for the wealth have failed completely. It is going to require most likely an additional 20 years for the public at large to realize that the economic policies associated with the Reagan and Thatcher eras were absolutely abysmal. Meanwhile, it is important that books like Urry's be widely read and its ideas shared. The failure of the Age of Reagan isn't necessarily the fate of future generations. It just takes people recognizing it.

A frightening eye-opener
By Steve Benner
John Urry is Distinguished Professor of Sociology at Lancaster University in North West England. Not surprisingly, therefore, his latest book, "Offshoring", is an academically rigorous and thoroughly researched summary of the sociological as well as economic effects of the comparatively recent global phenomenon of 'offshoring' -- i.e. the circumventing of regulatory or legislative restrictions on particular activities by moving those activities overseas to some other location with laxer laws or more 'relaxed' attitudes. Offshoring as a practice is not particularly new, but, as this book demonstrates, it has really flourished since the rise of financial neo-liberalism from the mid 1980s on.

For most people, offshore business is most likely to be associated with the exploitation of cheap, non-unionised labour markets -- most commonly in the provision of customer service call-centres -- or in the burgeoning use of overseas tax havens. It is clear from this book, however, that corporate tax avoidance and worker exploitation are but the tip of a huge iceberg of socially unacceptable or immoral outcomes of routine undertakings of the rich and the powerful. Such undertakings are invariably at the expense of the poor and less powerful and, as the author shows, ultimately indeed, of the very planet itself.

For many, John Urry's book will be a truly eye-opening and frightening read. In it, he chronicles the entire gamut of activities that, while central to today's interconnected world, nevertheless escape crucial regulation for the common good by being undertaken in offshore localities. Such activities are usually conducted in secret, often hidden behind faades of respectability (which further prevent too much inspection from prying eyes) and invariably kept comfortably out of the sight of the masses and thus well and truly out of mind.

The list is far longer and all-encompassing and the harm greater than you might think. Most commonly reported in the media these days and at least somewhat in the public spotlight is the routine offshoring of wealth and finance. This not only deprives societies generally of vast quantities of essential tax revenues but also leaves financial speculators free to gamble on money markets and other ephemera such as derivatives, rather than invest in real assets, and in the process risks bringing about complete global economic collapse. Similarly, offshoring of labour is known to damage workers' health and wellbeing in order to keep the richer parts of the world supplied with cheap consumer goods and services, the demand for which has been largely engineered by the offshoring businesses themselves.

Less obviously open to offshoring, perhaps, but shown in this book to be no less significant in their impact are:

- leisure activities, with overseas locations often sought as vacation destinations in order to legitimise otherwise illegal pleasure-seeking activities such as gambling, drug taking or sexual exploitation of (usually) women or children.

- energy provision, with the reliance on oil and gas driving drilling operations into ever more inhospitable and risky environments, increasing the chances of irreparable damage to fragile and vital ecosystems

- waste disposal, with ever increasing quantities of toxic and hazardous material discarded by rich consumers being shipped over the horizon, out of sight and out of mind, to pollute the lands and endanger of the lives of those make a living from processing the detritus of moden consumer-based living

- transportation, with the need to transport cheaply the growing volumes of (offshored) manufactured goods, energy sources and discarded waste, filling the oceans' shipping lanes with dangerously substandard cargo vessels registered under flags of convenience, frequently imperilling the lives of poorly paid crews and risking ecological mishap

- state security, with activities such as 'extraordinary rendition' supposedly legitimising the use of torture and other extreme means of extracting the knowledge supposedly required to separate friend from (often imaginary) 'enemy' -- often creating new, very real, enemies in the process.

The final chapters of the book demonstrate the wider harm that offshoring in general perpetuates -- widening inequalities; squandering of vital resources; irreversible environmental impact; loss of democracy; undermining of global security and the sacrificing of real freedoms for the illusory freedoms of the relentless consumer. It builds a potent argument for a reversal of the offshoring process, suggesting some potential avenues which might bring this about. (Some may regard the book as a clarion call to revolution, a declaration that it is time to topple the powerful from their positions. To read it this way though is to miss one of its central tenets: that the powerful are already beyond the reach of revolution, except on a truly global scale, as their seats of power are themselves largely offshored, making them inherently unreachable by the masses.)

The book is not without its faults: the author has a tendency towards repetition, which makes some sections a little tedious to read. I feel also that he takes the oceanic metaphor of offshoring a little too far (and I am not at all convinced of his assertion that 'salted away' is an original offshoring or sea-related expression either -- it doesn't mean 'hidden away' so much as 'preserved in case of need'.) These faults are neither major nor serious, however, and need not deter any potential reader; its message is too important to disregard.

How can these trends be reshored?
By Amazon Customer
This is another interesting book. This has been a good summer. Here John Urry delves into some of the most timely issues associated with the rise of Capital as described in another new book Capital in the Twenty-First Century. Given that Capital is again separating the very rich from everyone else, how can a socialist oriented society properly shift the wealth from that wealthy class for itself instead of in itself and spread that wealth so society is more balanced. An interesting point here though is Urry's comment that most of the really wealthy aren't taxed anyway and it is the upper middle classes that try to find offshore havens for their wealth to avoid taxes. But this book isn't just about that aspect of offshoring since it deals with the entire range of issues resulting from international movements or mobile wealth that has especially been stimulated by international policy to protect free trade and the electronic media that enables instant banking anywhere from anyplace. So how can the various countries find all this and tax it? Hints at how that might be done come in the last chapter. This book also hints at central issues inside nations that are affected by these changes too. Place, Not Race: A New Vision of Opportunity in America also ties into this as well as the excellent book The Divide: American Injustice in the Age of the Wealth Gap.

Red Star Falling: A Thriller (The Charlie Muffin Series Book 16), by Brian Freemantle

"If Brian Freemantle isn't the best writer of spy novels around, he's certainly, along with John le Carr, in the top two. . . . It doesn't get much better than this." ---The Philadelphia Inquirer

In a botched escape from Russia, MI5 spy Charlie Muffin is seized by the FSB, Russia's intelligence-service successor to the infamous KGB. Charlie is Russia's long-term target in British counter-intelligence, and Moscow is determined to extract, by whatever means necessary, every secret of British---and Western---espionage over Charlie's thirty-year career.

Charlie's determined not only to resist the interrogation but to learn from it if his Russian intelligence-officer wife and their daughter escaped the trap that snared him and have reached England. He embarks on a cat-and-mouse battle of deception to convince his interrogators that they're learning what they want---or think they want---aware that one misspoken word could be fatal.

That's not Charlie's only problem. He's also trying to work out how his escape was foiled. It could not have been only due to the FSB, or his wife and daughter would have been caught as well. His MI5 boss doesn't think it was, either, and suspects treachery by Britain's external intelligence organization, MI6. To help discover the truth, Natalia, Charlie's wife, uses all the Russian tradecraft she's ever learned to help save her husband.
Red Star Falling---the third in the Red Star trilogy---continues the acclaimed series that has established Brian Freemantle as one of the world's most ingenious espionage writers.

From Booklist
In the climax of Red Star Burning (2012), maverick MI5 agent Charlie Muffin was captured by the FSB at the Moscow airport after being shot (by another British agent) while extracting his wife, Natalia, an FSB agent, and his daughter, Sasha, from Russia. Yes, it’s complicated. When it appeared that Charlie and Natalia’s secret marriage was about to be exposed, Charlie put together a plan to bring his family to the West. That part worked, but Charlie now lingers in a Russian prison, where he is being interrogated by the FSB. Meanwhile, much backroom drama ensues in Britain, where rival groups in MI5 and MI6 are struggling for control as Natalia and another Russian defector become pawns in the bureaucratic cat fight. Unlike Red Star Burning, an intelligent but action-packed espionage tale of the old school, this one is almost completely devoid of action, focusing on boardrooms, interrogation sessions, even pillow talk—the venues where real spies most often ply their trade. Your pulse won’t pound, but your mind will be thoroughly engaged in this le Carr-like exploration of how manipulative bureaucrats pose a greater threat to individual lives than the cloak-and-dagger crowd ever did. --Bill Ott

Review

“In Freemantle's latest sophisticated spy thriller, the Muffin man remains a compelling figure, even in convalescent mode.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“The author again wickedly portrays the appalling internecine struggles between MI5 and MI6, yet retains a more sober vantage that the cold war is unending.” ―Crime Book Beat

Not Quite In from the Cold
By Charles Michener
Longtime readers of Brian Freemantle's Charlie Muffin spy thrillers will find all the usual hallmarks of this highly entertaining series in this latest entry: intricate tracking of the rivalries among Charlie's MI5 and MI6 spymasters in London; fresh evidence of Charlie's uncanny ability to anticipate his enemies' moves before they make them; and Freemantle's gift for delivering surprises right up to the last sentence. What they won't find in this perhaps not quite final installment in Charlie's cat-and-mouse game with the Kremlin is much in the way of action. Here, the fun come from wondering who will come out on top in the bureaucratic in-fighting and how Charlie can possibly escape the clutches of his Russian captors who are interrogating him inside a dacha guarded by feral dogs. As usual with Freemantle, his descriptions of how far great powers will go to cause maximum public embarrassment to one another hovers just this side of implausibility, which makes these stories so chillingly plausible. "Red Star Falling" is not exactly spine-tingling, but it's often appallingly amusing and leaves one still unsure as to how Charlie's reckless marriage to a former Russian spy is going to work out. For this Charlie Muffin fan, that's enough.

Not Enough Charlie
By uglygorilla
Been a Charlie Muffin fan for years (I'm old) and felt the finale to this trilogy was lacking a bit and Charlie was more absent than in any of the previous novels (including the first two Red Star books), more about the London operations than Charlie.

Nevertheless, still a cracking read and I hope that the author still has one or two books up his sleeve for Charlie, there's still life in those old Hush Puppies and more Islay whisky to be drunk.
And even if I am an old fart, I appreciate the author putting this out electronically rather just in paperback, instant, easy and better.

Loose ends....[spoiler alert!]
By B. Abramson
Be aware that this note refers to the aspects of the plot that you might not want to know about in advance.....

Freemantle's Charlie Muffin books are very good indeed. The plots are complex, the inside knowledge most impressive, the characters credible (up to a point), and there are always surprises.

In this third book in the Red Star series Freemantle more or less completes the story that begins with the discovery of a body in the grounds of the British embassy in Moscow. As this is legally British territory it falls to MI5 (~ domestic intelligence) rather than MI6 (~ external intelligence) to investigate (though why Scotland Yard aren't involved is another mystery). Charlie Muffin is assigned. In the first volume he solves the crime and uncovers a deep Soviet/Russian plot against the US. In the second volume he returns to Moscow to extract his Russian wife, who works for Russian intelligence, and their daughter. He succeeds but is captured before he can leave the country. Meanwhile, in parallel, British intelligence extracts the second-in-command of Russian intelligence from Russia and brings him and his wife to the UK.

In this volume we discover that much of what we were led to believe in the first two volumes wasn't quite what it appeared to be. This is where it seems that loose ends are left and the plot trips over itself. Charlie would not have solved the murder without the help of a Russian woman who claims to be the victim's lover but who Charlie exposes as an intelligence operative. Through his exposure of her "true" self he discovers and ends the plot against the US. However, if this woman had not contacted Charlie the crime would not have been solved and the Russian plot may have succeeded. So why did Russian intelligence go down this path?

The MI6 Operations Director has gathered information to demonstrate that his boss, the head of MI6, is a security risk, a megalomaniac, and is planning to have Charlie assassinated to distract the Russians while MI6 extracts the Russian intelligence director. This is enough to have the head of MI6 removed but rather than acting on the information he appears to commit suicide. Was it suicide? If so why, if not, what’s going on? This is left hanging in the air.

Operationally, would MI6 really hold a meeting between the extracted Russians and Russian diplomats in a prison? Don’t they realize how the Russians would make this look to the public? Further, they record this encounter with video and audio. Later they discover that the sound has been lost as the visiting Russians brought interfering equipment with them. How is it that there were no technicians monitoring the recording as it was being made? This happens at every other encounter. This just isn’t credible.

Freemantle consistently presents the people at the top of organizations (here the civil service and the intelligence services) to be totally consumed with preserving and advancing their own careers, strengthening their organization’s stature, and undermining every possible competitor. It is assumed that these goals can only be achieved through Machiavellian means. The possibility that you can succeed by being exceptionally good at what you do (as Charlie is) never seems to occur to them. I am sure such leaders are not uncommon but to find every them portrayed as pervading every organization becomes unreasonable and unbelievable.

There are other loose ends, not many, but enough to be annoying in such a tightly plotted series.

Perhaps there’s anther volume to follow.

The Romantic movement led to some of the greatest works of 19th-century American literature. Written expressly for students, this book offers succinct introductions to 10 of the most important works of American Romanticism, many of which reflect the social, political, and historical concerns of the era. Included are chapters on Emerson's essays, Poe's The Raven and selected stories, Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin, and several other major texts or collections. Each chapter provides biographical information, a review of the author's critical reception, and a discussion of characters, plot, themes, language, and other topics. The volume closes with a bibliography of primary and secondary sources.

Romanticism significantly influenced American literature in the 19th century and led to what has sometimes been called the American Renaissance. The Romantic movement and the period roughly contemporaneous with the Civil War gave birth to some of the most creative and enduring poems, novels, short fiction, and essays. These works are among the most imaginative and challenging pieces of American literature and hold a central place in the curriculum. In addition to their value as literary works, they chronicle the enormous social, political, and historical changes taking place in America. Written expressly for high school students, this book conveniently introduces the major works of American Romanticism.

Throwing Stones, by Robin Reardon

What if you fell in love with a Pagan?
And what if you were both gay? What would happen next?

In this paranormal romance, something is drawing seventeen-year-old Jesse Bryce toward the community of Pagans who live in "the village," just outside his rural Oklahoma town. Maybe it's that he has a crush on Griffin Holyoke, a tall, dark-haired boy with a tree tattooed all up his back. Or maybe it's that the Pagans accept Jesse for who he is, unlike his family--or his church, where he hears that being gay is a sin.

  • After a man from the village is murdered while trying to prevent an assault on a girl from the town, Jesse's confusion at the town's unsympathetic reaction inspires him to set a mission for himself: to build a bridge of acceptance between the town and the village.
  • As Jesse defies his parents and continues to visit the village, he witnesses mysterious rituals that haunt him with their beauty and intensity. And he falls in love with one enigmatic, mercurial Pagan who opens his eyes to a whole new world.
This first-person story explores what can happen when we make conclusions about others based on too little information, or on the wrong information. Whether we're misunderstanding each others' religions or each others' sexual orientation, everyone benefits from learning the truth. And everyone benefits from forgiveness.

Review
From the readers of Throwing Stones...

"Reardon is such a compassionate writer that even unsympathetic, even unlikable, characters are treated with respect. I cannot emphasize enough how talented and creative this author is. Get this book, and you won't be disappointed."

"Reardon writes with a sense of immediacy that brought me directly into the action and into the world of two very different communities. She creates characters with genuine depth and makes me care what happens to them. Read this book! You'll beglad you did."

"Readers of Robin Reardon's other work know what to expect by now: an endearing, well-developed, and introspective LGBTQ protagonist, a twisting plot worthy of the craziest telenovela, and deep explorations of myriad subjects highlighted by especially deep discussions of religious concerns."

From the Author
Are you afraid of Pagans?

Throwing Stones is a bookthat might challenge readers on a couple of fronts. First, like all mybooks, it revolves around a gay teen and, yes, his love interest.Second? Well, although all my books include some aspect of religion orreligious practice -- either metaphorically or front-and-center -- thisone will present some readers with a new challenge.

My dentistloves my books (no, he's not gay; he just loves my books), and his staff members know it. Last time I was there, his bookkeeper asked me what Iwas working on now. I said, "I'm writing a story about a teen who wantsto reconcile his family and the people in his town with a group ofPagans who..." I stopped before I could finish my sentence, because hereyes had gone wide. Very wide. But not, I would have said, withinterest. It was the kind of surprise that borders on fear. The word"Pagans" shocked her.

I live in eastern Massachusetts, an areaknown for progressive attitudes and where I would have expected thatanyone I spoke to would perhaps be intrigued by the idea of a Pagancommunity. I did not expect fear.

Paganism is a world religion.Pagan worship and practice can take many different forms, as canChristianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism -- that is, as can any religion.Adherents might practice Wicca or they might not. They might see theircentral figure as The Goddess or they might not. They might belong to agrove (or parish) or they might not. They might take the eight annualsabbats, or holy days, very seriously, or they might not. In otherwords, Pagans are people, and Paganism is a belief system -- that is, areligion.

What Pagans are not is devil worshippers. In myresearch for the story, I couldn't find any evidence that Pagans evenacknowledge (let alone believe in) any concept that equates to theJudeo-Christian devil. What I found was an extremely diverse, autonomous collective of individual people whose credo, "An it harm none, do as ye will," is even more challenging to follow faithfully than the Christian Golden Rule ("Do unto others as you would have done to you."). ThePagan credo challenges members to understand others--as well asthemselves, for they are not to harm themselves, either -- as well aspossible before taking action, or they can't know what harm might bedone.

Throwing Stones throws one metaphorical stone right between the widened eyes of people who fear and condemn the "other," the"different," without making an effort to understand that other. Thishappens to Pagans. And it happens to gays. It needs to stop.

Makes you question if we quit too soon? I love this book. A Rare Book To Show Pagan Folk Fairly in Fiction
By Tidal Ashburn
I just finished reading Throwing Stones. I found this book to be stunning. We meet Jesse Brice; he comes from a good Christian family. He goes to public school and he makes friends. Some of his friends are in “The Village.” They are the Pagans, those who are from the wrong side of the tracks, the butt of jokes and those the first under suspicion for any tragedy real or imagined.
Jesse is gay and that does not fly too well with his conservative home, they are not thrilled that he came out. Jesse is bullied at school and that makes it worse.
He feel like a man without a country at home, he is shunned and rejected, at the village he is accepted, and yet he cannot reconcile that he still loves his family and despite their rejection and hurt, he realized they still love him.

This book is marvelous because it shows the frailties of both sides it demonizes no one. It shows the power of what one young man can do when he is more focused on building bridges and not walls. It shows mirrors to everyone the biases that can blind us in the face of anger, rage, and betrayal.

Jesse is drawn to the inhabitants of the village. He is shunned by his family, bullied at school and prohibited to see the only people who understand him. At first he thinks it is hormones that draw him to the inhabitants of the village but he slowly learns it is not that but something more substantial something so deep yet understand nor deny it is something very real.

One of the powerful strengths of this story was that it was NOT preachy or heavy-handed. I really made me think. Jesse does some really brave to bring both sides together. What I found interesting is the way he did it. The writer was a genius because it revealed some of the biases and suspicions that both sides so clearly embrace.
I realized that if it had been me, I would have thrown so many of these people away after the first abuse and never looked back without a second thought. Jesse chooses not to do that he persevered. It made me contemplate the many times in my life that I threw someone away too quickly or the many times that someone had gave up on me too quickly. Then I wondered how differently my life would have been if that had not happened.
For many years, I have been all about building bridges and not making walls so my heart was open to hear and listen to Jesse’s message. As the story unfolds, we begin to understand why some of the difficult people to care about in the story became that way.

Jesse finds peace, love, and people mend fences. This is not a flowery book with a cutesy TV movie Hallmark Christmas time Happy Ending. It is real people with real emotion. It has a happy conclusion but it only comes because people are genuine, real, and honest with others and themselves.
Lastly, this book is one of the very few books with Pagan characters that I have been pleased to see Pagan people honestly portrayed, neither perfect nor demonic but only human. The truth is people rarely have life changing moments because of one conversation. Here is a real secret about Pagan people and about regular people too actually, when it comes to growth. It happens incrementally in time, in stages with up’s and downs, they evolve; this realistic quality is what makes this book so very real. Too many books give characters epiphanies too easily that do not require work.
When the Pagan’s in this book practice their religion or rituals they are realistic, they are honestly portray what Pagan’s really do. They are not stupid vehicles to escape problems, take people choices, find excuses for drunken orgies, fix poorly conceived plot holes or most offensively to absolve the main character of personal responsibility, substitute magick for hard work, tenacity, perseverance and having difficult conversations.

This book has a happy ending and I must confess I did need tissue on several occasion but they were honestly earned and not the manipulative pulling of heart strings of sentamentality. We see a young teenager grow into manhood and change an entire community and more importantly embrace who he really is, find wholeness and not compromise who he is.
I love this book. It provides a wonderful opportunity to open communication for some very important conversations as well as to build bridges of love and understanding.

I apologize if this review is long winded and the last think I want to leave the reader with is the impression that this is a stuffy , long boring, heavy handed preachy boring book I promise it is not any of those things. It is a loving book with many characters that we get to know, and care about. I left feeling very satisfying and a bit more equipped to understand people who I knew were not malevolent but puzzling to me. Without hesitation, this book is worth every star I gave it. This book is a rewarding treat and well worth your time.

Robin Reardon's newest book is GREAT!
By Eric McDermott
I have to be honest; I have yet to read one of Robin Reardon's books without falling in love with the book, and "Throwing Stones" is no exception. All of her books have a strong gay characters that are trying to come to terms with their own feelings and dealing with friends/family/communities as they are in the process of coming out. But she also tackles other themes that are in the forefront of our society today: transgender issues (Educating Simon), Intelligent Design and mental illness (Evolution of Ethan Poe), and fundamentalist religion (The Revelations of Jude Conner- a special favorite as it is set in Idaho where I live). Her novels use the other issues to address the themes of hatred, discrimination, ostracism, and acceptance. These issues are then used to also show how the gay population in our country is treated in similar fashion. Her newest novel, "Throwing Stones," is no exception and is a great addition to Ms. Reardon's canon. As in many of her other books, religion and its part in our society, both positive and negative, takes a central role.

"Throwing Stones" is the story of Jesse Birch, a teenager living in a small town in south-eastern Oklahoma. Jesse finds himself falling head-over-heels for Griffin Holyoke, a hot, young fellow classmate. The problem is that Griffin is from the "village," a group of Pagans that live in a community on the southern edge of Jesse's small town. The people of the "village" have been accused of everything from vampirism and child-stealing to witchcraft and devil-worship. As Jesse spends more time with Griffin and his "people" he begins to realize that these stories are completely wrong. When his affection for Griffin, who is straight, are not returned Jesse turns his attention to another dark and brooding young man in the village, Ronan, who does return Jesse's interest. As the story progesses, Jesse tries to get his conservative family to understand both his homosexuality and the truth behind the people of the village. Along with the daughter of his church's minister, Jesse forms a student group at his school as an attempt to bridge the gap of misinformation between the two communities. The leaders of the town and the village also get in on Jesse's mission to bring the two groups together. As the contacts between the townies and the villagers increase, incidents of vandalism and violence increase threatening not only Jesse, but his friends and family as well. And through it all, Jesse is trying to work through his relationship with Ronan, who doesn't agree with Jesse's attempts to bring the two communities closer.

One of the great strengths of Robin's books is the depth of research she must do in order to be able to talk about these issues in such great detail. (Its also why we have to wait SO LONG between the release of her new novels!) Whether its dealing with the topic of Paganism and what it IS and ISN'T, talking about rockhounding in south-eastern Oklahoma, or describing the process of setting up a controversial school club (in this case a TVA,a town-village alliance, as opposed to a GSA, a gay-straight alliance), her books are always full of pertinent information necessary for the story without being so overly detailed as to cause the story to drag. I always learn something when reading her books.

Many of the other reviews talked about the amount and graphicness of the sex scenes in Throwing Stones. Personally, I didn't find it to have a greater amount or more graphic sex than many other YA novels written today. If you add all of the "sex scenes" together they add up to slightly over 2 pages of an more than 300 page novel. As a teacher of high school freshman, many of the books my students are reading have as much sex, or more, as this book. I wonder if the issue has to do with the fact that it is gay sex that is described and we still are a bit more concerned over its description in YA novels than straight sex. I wouldn't put this book in a junior high library, but think it is fine as a high school YA novel. But I will admit, I do tend to be more liberal on this topic than some.

In conclusion, I loved Robin Reardon's new novel. Now I just have to wait a year or so for her next one.

One last comment, I absolutely LOVED the cover on this book. It is the best cover on any of her books. I know that doesn't have anything to do with the story, but wanted to congratulate Ms. Reardon for a great choice.

Now for the obligatory disclaimer: I recieved a free copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review. But I will also admit that I have ordered a print copy of it to add to my collection.

By Kevin Pendry
I have read all of Robin's books, and I have loved them all. This one is probably my favorite one SO FAR. Being a gay pagan myself, I completely understood the characters. Robin is such a compassionate writer that even unsympathetic, even unlikable, characters are treated with respect. I cannot emphasize enough how talented and creative this author is. Get this book, and you won't be disappointed. Then get all her other books! Believe me, you'll want to. Thanks for another wonderful, enlightened book, Ms.Reardon. Every gay teenager out there is so lucky to have your books to turn to. Make that every READER out there is lucky to have your books. I'm glad I'm one of them!
