F8F Bearcat Detail in "Action"

Although this book provides all the technical specs for the F8F I was disappointed that it focused almost entirely on the F8F in US Service and private air-show and air-racing craft. Almost nothing was said about the Bearcat's service with the French in Indochina where it actually saw significant combat usage and no aircraft profile art showing Bearcats in French service. Other than this omission, it's an excellent technical overview of the F8F for aviation enthusiasts and model makers.

In this wonderful book, John Walsh presents a panoramic view of Probability Theory, starting from basic facts on mean, median and mode, continuing with an excellent account of Markov chains and martingales, and culminating with Brownian motion. Throughout, the author's personal style is apparent; he manages to combine rigor with an emphasis on the key ideas so the reader never loses sight of the forest by being surrounded by too many trees. As noted in the preface, "To teach a course with pleasure, one should learn at the same time." It is highly rigorous but written with a pleasant style. Before the reading of this book I really hated the probability, after the reading of this book I love that is related with probability.

A beautiful book on probaility

This book really deserves to be more widely known - just one review so far is absurd for a book of this quality. It is one of the most vivid and engaging book on probability I've seen so far.

I cannot see that it really has much competition. All the books on probability (I've seen) that nurture your intuition have little to no measure theory; conversely most measure theory books assume you already have the intuition. But students of the subject who don't have the best probabilistic intuition AND are comfortable with abstract mathematics at the senior-undergrad-or-beginning-graduate level are not really served by any books on the market (again, as far as I know). For example, Ash, Billingsley, Resnick, Rosenthal et al don't help you with intuition. And on the other side, there are too many books to mention, but they typically don't tell you what a sigma algebra or for that matter a filtration is. Walsh does both - he gives you the intuition and the rigor.

I believe this book will work best for people who have the background described above. My own background is in machine learning, and Walsh's book is extremely well-suited to my needs. But I think it would also work beautifully for students who have done the basic course in probability and want to see more. Or perhaps people whose education in probability has been scattershot and uneven; Walsh will pull it together for you.

It's very clearly written, with an understated "aliveness" that is rare and doesn't distract from the subject.

About the Author
Erle Stanley Gardner (1889-1970) is the master of American mystery fiction. A civil rights lawyer, his mysteries contain intricate, ever-twisting plots. Challenging and full of surprises, these are whodunits in the best tradition. He wrote 146 books, 85 of which feature Perry Mason. The fictional attorney became the basis of a number of television series (reputedly 271 episodes), and achieved an enviable record for winning his cases. Erle Stanley Gardner has an amazing sales record: at the height of his popularity in the mid-1960s he was selling an average of 26,000 copies of his novels a day, making him one of the world's best selling author's, easily outstripping at the time Agatha Christie and Barbara Cartland combined. Born in Malden, Massachusetts, Gardner went on to attend Law School in Indiana, but this only lasted for around a month, being suspended because of various distractions to his studies, especially boxing. He moved to California and became a self-taught attorney before opening his own law office. However, being bored with this he ended up working in sales for five years. Returning to the law in 1921, he created another law firm, but again was not really enthusiastic, other than when acting as a trial lawyer. Writing was his great passion and eventually he gave up the law completely to pursue a full time writing career. In this he was prodigious, setting himself a target of 66,000 words per week. His output under various pseudonyms, as well as his own, went wider than Perry Mason and also extended to non-fiction. He became an expert on the early Mexican exploitation of California. In later life, law did play a significant part in his life once again. With friends, he set up what they termed 'The Court of Last Resort', aimed at investigating and attempting to reverse what they perceived as miscarriages of justice because of poor legal representation, or evidential problems. Gardner himself once wrote: 'I want to make my hero a fighter, not by having him be ruthless to women and underlings, but by creating a character who, with infinite patience jockeys his enemies into a position where he can deliver one good knockout punch.'

Very well-plotted, highly recommended

Very well-plotted mystery. Every small details were combined to the truth. Trial scenes took larger part in this novel and I like trial scenes. Highly recommended.

Typical Perry Mason mystery

The mystery presents all of the usual problems and how to solve them. In fact the TV show version is what was written, with the usual minor changes of the shooting script.
