The inspirational true story portrays the real life of a surfing champion, who fights all odds to chase his lifetime dream. As a Master storyteller, the author describes a young man's quest to surf one of California's most dangerous waves, his friendship and strong bond with his mentor, and the risks taken for the love and passion of surfing. "CHASING MAVERICKS" is heartwarming in relationships, heart-wrenching as we learn the true definition of a close-call in a near-death situation, and powerfully moving as we learn about pushing your limits. The surfing champion rides the huge waves, faces scary consequences, but his spirit for love of surfing never discourages him to quit. His will-power and determination are incredible. This book is as thrilling and as intriguing as the movie, which leaves the viewer mesmerized as we feel as if we are there, while the ocean's stunning waves come to life. Both the book and the movie are interesting, amazing, and addictive! The touching story also includes life's ups-and-downs, and the importance of relationships and mentors in our lives. As a beach-lover from the Northeast, forty-five years of my life, I would indeed watch the movie again, and enjoyed the book very much. A delightful, inspiring page-turner! Highly Recommended!

The first book of photography I had to own

In a close relationship to a photographer I have been looking into different photographers and this was shown to me. I fell in love with her work, Some are saying that her family photos were somehow a downfall in the book but it was more so the pictures of Annie's mother and her self portraits that stayed in my head for days until I decided to buy the book. One particular a self portrait of Annie (my favorite in the book) in bed holding her legs up with a look of complete serinity. Beautiful.

Breathtaking!

It was refreshing to see a collection of Annie's work that focuses more on the person behind the camera than the people in front of it. While I love the photos she does for the magazines, I was tired of seeing books that focused on that. That's too superficial to me. I was interested in getting into her soul. And this book gave it to me!

From the introduction pages to the final snapshots of her children, this book kept me drawn in. I felt like I was there with her experiencing all the events. It gave me a personal glimpse of what she's been through without being intrusive. If I were to be really picky, I would say that, yes, there are some pretty obvious technical mistakes. Especially for someone as experienced as herself. But that's not what this book is about. If you want the technically flawless and aesthetically perfect stuff, go look in Vogue or Vanity Fair. If you want to see a bit of her heart and soul, get this book.

A Photographer's Life --more than voyeurism

It's likely the first time you browse through A Photographer's Life, you will use it as a peeping tom would use a window, as a voyeur, looking in on the lives of famous people -- and perhaps that's the intention. But then, go back and gaze at the photos as art, looking for the lighting, the mood, the context. Leibovitz's photos of herself are almost too revealing, but use them as the introduction to herself as she intended. The photos she took for Rolling Stone of rock stars and politicians are as rich as the articles for which her photos were shot. Read them as you would the article itself. You will learn much.

What I've been looking for!

As a result of the resurgence in Sherlock's popularity, there are a growing number of books that are making their attempt to teach Sherlock's Method or the way that he thinks. I myself have bought Mastermind, How to think like Sherlock, The Deduction Guide, Taz Rai's The Art of Deduction (not the art of deduction book here on amazon), The Elementary Methods of Sherlock Holmes, Snoop, The Secret Life of Pronouns, I've watched Sherlock, Elementary, House MD, Criminal Minds, and read Conan Doyle's, stories, scoured blogs and the internet for more pertinent information, read extensive information on various subjects and have come to a conclusion.

In order to sort the relevant from the irrelevant, the good from the bad, you would have to write your own book on the subject. in fact i plan to, in a different area, because i wouldn't want to be counter productive, but this book is very similar to the one i would've written, at least the first one.

The author uses examples from the canon for the reader to observe Holmes using particular parts of his method, and then teaching you how to apply it in the real modern day world, and suggests a wealth of practical exercises designed to improve your natural abilities to do the same. these are not brain teasers, or anything like it. there are specific observation training exercises, listening exercises etc. if you've read any of the above books mentioned chances are that this is what you've been looking for, i know, i was.

It's concise, and to the point, and doesn't bite off more than it can chew. and as an added bonus, the author challenges the reader to discover a secret that he has embedded in the book, in true mystery story spirit! the secret, while not a major revelation of any sort, as he says "you already know it", can provide a motivation in the student that could be absent had he/she not endeavored.

If you're a fan of Sherlock Holmes and have ever wanted to buy a book that could help you do what Sherlock does, this is without a doubt, one that get's a very high recommendation.

FOR THE SHERLOCK HOLMES IN ALL OF US!

As a HUGE longtime fan of Sherlock Holmes I can truthfully say I loved the book HOW TO INSTANTLY SIZE UP STRANGERS LIKE SHERLOCK HOLMES BY MAR A WILLIAMS SR. The author took apart piece by piece the "methods" Mr Holmes used to find out the bad guys. What amused me was they arent rocket science folks! Just simple observation and listening skills. In the book he referenced Holmes books when trying to make a point or example. At the last section of the book he challenges you to test your new found knowledge. Reading the book made me want to drag my Sherlock Holmes books to reread and test my new skills!

The complete "War and Peace" of appliance repair!

First off, may I start off by saying, this book must have taken a decade to write. It is simply huge (and daunting at first). It's pages are crammed packed with anything you may have for questions on the subject, right down to the customer interaction that you have with your homeowner. Gas, electric, small, large, the answers are here. It is written concise and very easy to follow. Any new repair tech. could bring this with him/her on the job and slip out for a minute to verify their findings with the information printed and it is like bringing a veteran to the site with you. Great for the pro who likes to study to keep sharp too!

Great investment for the do it yourself homeowner.

I had an old appliance repair but it was quite outdated. I was skeptical about this having relevant usable information that wasn't just theory. This manual explains the workings of almost all from stoves to microwaves and all the nuts and bolts about their operation. I repaired a friends clothes dryer with it the second week I had it and charged them $45.00 for the fix. About half of a service call and they were very happy too.
