Older edition but good enough to be used as reference

This has little bit old information but good enough for learning it for first time use. It's got good illustration and information that's useful like how a human sexual organ, step-by-step arouses and engorges with blood on both genders, and shows which parts are called what and how it changes during sexual arousal. This volume of al-Tabari's history deals with the traumatic breakup of the Muslim community following the assassination of the Caliph 'Uthman. It begins with the first seriously contested succession to the caliphate, that of 'Ali, and proceeds inexorably through the rebellion of 'A'ishah, T'alhah, and al-Zubayr, to the Battle of the Camel, the first time Muslim army faced Muslim army. It thus deals with the very first violent response to the two central problems of Muslim history: who is the rightful leader, and which is the true community? It is a section with the weightiest implications for the Muslim interpretation of history, wide open to special pleading.

There are the Shi'a who depict 'Ali as a spiritual leader fighting against false accusations and the worldly ambitious. Conversely, there are those who would depict him or his followers in a negative light. There are also the 'Abbasid historians, who, though anti-Umayyad, must balance a reverence for the Prophet's household (ahl al-bayt) with a denunciation of 'Alid antiestablishmentarianism. All these points of view, and more, are represented in al-Tabari's compilation, illustrating the difficulty the Muslim community as a whole has faced in coming to terms with these disastrous events.

highly entertaining history

in reply to the claim that Tabari is almost as blasphemous as Rushdie, Professor Mohja Kahf drily remarked that its no surprise, since both are writers of fiction! Any historian who writes a couple of hundred years after the event and reports dialogue, witticisms and even facial expressions is obviously writing a lot of fiction, but fiction or not, its high drama, presented in vivid detail. Tabari makes no attempt at social or economic analysis and has little to say about what the "common people" might have been doing and why, but his history is one of the prime sources for all the famous stories of islamic history and reading it is the best way to get an idea of what the times were like. Particular details may or may not be true, but the development of the community was based on exactly these stories and their impact is real even if their content is sometimes not. Tabari also has a flair for the dramatic. reading his account of the assasination of Usman or the martyrdom of Hussain makes one think of the amazing movies that could be made based on this material! well worth a read....

A wonderfully optimistic book.

A wonderful book, carefully researched and well written. Brilliant in concept and execution. Here is the statistical proof about how the internet is opening up Islam, allowing the younger generation to distance themselves from older traditional practices; increasing intermarriage outside tribal and ethnic lines; increasing cosmopolitanism; increasing support for women working and other gender rights; huge increase in study abroad and resultant "social remittances"; and strong belief in free market and entrepreneurship. Very optimistic.

Minor Notes

Obviously, this and the other 4 volumes in the series are fated to become classic texts for higher-level analysis. Some few of you may be curious about the rate of errata for 3000+ pages of newly-printed math. Here's what I've found after finishing the first chapter:

1) In the Preface, Niels Bohr is called "Neils".
2) The definition of a well-ordered set on Page 10 neglects to mention that it is only *nonempty* subsets that require a smallest element.
3) We are told specifically that Z_+ and C_+ exclude 0, but we don't seem to be told about R_+. If it also excludes 0, then the statement on Pages 10 and 11 that every (nonempty?) subset of R_+ has an infimum would seem to fail.
4) On Page 16, Aleph_{n+1} is mischaracterized as being equal to 2^{Aleph_n} (as if the GCH were assumed true).
5) In formula (1.7.3) on Page 18, x_ell should be y_ell.
6) In the proof of Proposition 1.7.2 on Page 20, X and W are mixed up with x and w.
7) In the second paragraph of the proof of Proposition 1.7.7 on Page 23, projection operators seem to lose their subscripts.
8) In the sketch of the proof of Theorem 1.8.4 on Page 32, "sup" should be "supp".
9) "Bounded sequence on increasing reals" (p. 16), "is group homomorphism" (p. 18), and "finite linear combination are dense" (p. 18) were probably not meant to read exactly that way.
