I truly think all of these "Success Q & A" books are essential study tools for me and my nursing school family. All of us who had this book did exceptionally well on our first Mental Health Nursing exam last week!! The book is laid out very clearly and the rationales are explained in such a way that when you see a similar question on the exam, you understand why each answer is right and wrong.

The only thing to watch out for is that 2 of my nursing school friends had gotten a book that was printed incorrectly with no Chapter 13 on Schizophrenia, which of course was on our first exam! I was able to let them borrow mine, but just make sure to check your book when you first receive it!

Not helpful for the ANCC certification exam

I just took the ANCC psych nurse certification exam and although I did pass I can honestly say that this book did not help in the least. The questions on the exam were nothing like the question a in this book. Review side effects/ lab normals of clorzaril and lithium and review how to address Asian and American Indian culture and you'll be more prepared for the exam than answering all the questions in this book.

This book is perfect for preparing for exams! Especially if your teacher uses NCLEX style questions. This book is organized in sections ,so it is easy to focus on topics relevant to being what is covered in your class and on exams. This book provides rationales for all of the answer choices so you can see what you did right and wrong. I do not know what I would do without his book. I will definitely be purchasing the other books in this series as a study aide for my classes. This book helps teach you how to apply concepts.

About the Author
Moorad Choudhry is a vice-president in Structured Finance Services with JP Morgan Chase Bank in London. Prior to this he worked as a gilt-edged market maker and Treasury trader at ABN Amro Hoare Govett Sterling Bonds Limited, and as a sterling proprietary trader at Hambros Bank Limited. Moorad has lectured on the bond markets at the London School of Economics, the ISMA Centre in Reading, London Guildhall University and the International Faculty of Finance, and is a senior Fellow at the Centre for Mathematical Trading and Finance, CASS Business School, London. He is a Fellow of the Securities Institute and a Fellow of the Global Association of Risk Professionals. Moorad’s published work includes journal articles and books. He is also co-author of the book The Global Money Markets, written with Professor Frank Fabozzi. Moorad obtained an MA in Economics from the University of Reading and an MBA from Henley Management College. He is in the process of completing his PhD from Birkbeck, University of London. He is Editor of the Journal of Bond Trading and Management.�

Very weak

Sorry to give this book a one star. But it is advertised by the publisher and the author as a tool for practitioners, not as a book to cram before the finals and then toss away for good.

The book reads like a collection of old academic papers without any connection to practical applications.

After using relatively advanced math, and going into unnecessary details of the old and useless academic theories, the applications is covered at a level of a introductory MBA class. You want a hedged steepener? Go ahead, "just match DV01, says the author. What about the fact the yield curves normally don't shift in parallel? That's where all those fancy models could come in to help construct a better hedge. The author's advice? He doesn't even mention the issue. What's the point of spending most of the book describing yield curve models that are never connected to even the most basic real problems?

A lot of comments are cryptic and poorly worded. You could match durations instead of DV01, says the book, but it doesn't work any better in practice. Huh?.. what's the difference? (There may be one, depending on the definition, but the author doesn't bother to explain.)

What about partial duration, principal components or any other standard yield curve modeling tools? Keep hoping. This is apparently not academic enough to mention.

Very, very disappointed.

Good for getting a feel of the subject

I work with Interest Rate Derivatives and I found this book an easy read.
This book will be particularly helpful to folks who are more interested in application part of it. I would say this is the kind of book I'll want my traders to read, if they want to understand the logic behind the models I make. This book will not teach them Stochastic Calculus or PDEs, but this will definitely give them everything they need to understand the logic - without exactly covering all the mathematical nitty-gritties. And if they want to know more, the book abounds in some very useful references. Has a few typos. But almost all of them are pretty obvious ones - so not much pain there.

All in all, I would say that at its price this book should certainly be in everyone's library.

Example is always more efficacious than percept. A must buy

Yield Curve modeling is on of the major subjects of fixed income, a subject of great power and benefits. As the author explains eloquently (page 56) that the yield curve is very easy to grasp the basics, but difficult to become expert at. It is linked by countless equation with vast underlying framework.
Despite its forbidding nature yield curve modeling is vital component of the fixed income market. It has wide range of applications and practical importance. However, the lack understanding so often encountered leaves students and market investors with a gap between able to use the theory and being able to do so. One way of promoting understanding and bridging this gap is the method this book follows. The way of this book is to make the reader understand the subject by providing detailed explanation with carefully selected examples, show how principles and concepts may be applied to particular problem. And then offering the reader examples that differ slightly but which can be tackled by an extension of the approach that have been used previously. All this is evident in chapter one. In chapter two the author selects well motivated examples to demonstrate specific principle and concepts.
The book starts with an overview of the concept of bond yields and bond yield measurement. It then discusses the basic terminology of the yield curve. The core topics of classical yield curve are then examined in chapter two. It includes brief introduction to each topic where important results are stated and sometimes derived or reference given, followed by a number of practical example worked out in detail. Part two of the book deals with the very practical topic of yield curve modeling.
One of the powerful features of this book is that it provides relationship between theory and market practice. To sum up, the author explains all the components of the yield curve modeling at the atomic level.

She holds a master's degree in business education from Northern Illinois �University and a doctorate in adult and community education from Ball State University. Dr. Gaskin has 15 years of experience in the computer industry with several Fortune 500 companies and has developed and written training materials for custom systems applications in both the public and private sector. She is also the author of books on Microsoft Outlook and word processing.

Nancy Graviett is a professor in the Business and Computer Science department at St. Charles Community College in Cottleville, Missouri, where she is the program coordinator for the Business Administrative Systems program and teaches within the program. Nancy is also very active with distance learning and teaches in face-to-face, hybrid, and online formats. She holds a master’s degree from University of Missouri. Nancy holds Microsoft Certified Application Specialist certification in multiple applications and provides training both on and off campus. Not needed for class

This book was a required book for my class, oddly enough the author was my professor. I may have used a total of a page or two for my entire semester. I feel that was an egregious conflict of interest. I can't say if it would be helpful for other sociology classes. It seemed like it would have been helpful, but just not for my Soc 101 class, which you think the professor would have tailored around.

fine book; out of print

Irving Sloane's book on guitar construction was first published in 1975. A reprint was published in 1990. It is out of print, but still for sale new from luthier supply catalogs. Used copies can also be found through Amazon.

The book is nicely illustrated with clear black-and-white photographs on nearly every page, many of which are large, full-page pictures. Sloane's method of construction involves the assembly of the rim using a rudimentary mold, then attachment of the back and sides, and then the neck. His method of joining the neck to the body is unusual and I doubt that I would ever attempt it. There are also sections on inlay and finishing techniques.

Like Cumpiano's book this one is quite old and does not reflect recent innovations in guitar construction. I am not certain that builders on a budget would want to put Sloane's book high on their list of required reading. Nevertheless it is a good book and it is always worthwhile to see how different builders go about different ways of solving a problem. As an aside, there is a brief section on archtop guitar construction which is interesting in that it shows famous arch-top makers John D'Angelico and his successor James D'Aquisto at work in their shop. This may be the most worthwhile thing in Sloane's book, given the abundance of guitar construction information available on the internet and in newer publications.

Not for the Amateur

As another reader has pointed out, Sloane's book is not for the beginner; it may not be for the advanced builder either, but the point is probably moot. Of the hundreds of steps required to build a steel-string guitar, Sloane has detailed perhaps 25, and has left the reader to puzzle out things like the intricacies of bridge, nut, and saddle execution. The section on the archtop guitar is pure picture-book, but fascinating, and at least gives readers a good look inside the archtop, which dramatically highlights its differences from the fixed-bridge steel-string.

But I have to take issue with the reader who said Cumpiano's book wasn't up to contemporary standards of building. Having built a guitar with Cumpiano in his shop - preceded by two careful readings of his book - I can personally attest to the value of the writing and of the hundreds of detailed pictures, drawings and diagrams. I highly recommend Cumpiano's book to anyone who is thinking of building a guitar. Updates to some of his procedures are available from Cumpiano's web site.

SLYLY ASKEW PORTRAITS OF THE LIVES OF LOSERS, MISFITS AND MOMENTARILY OFF-BALANCED NORMAL TYPES

The style in Annie Baker’s four plays collected here in The Vermont Plays is a kind of hyper-charged, intensely poetic realism. Allied to that, there is affection for the misplaced souls of our time, who still have dreams of their own, however pitiful they may seem to those of us who are better off.

The Aliens (2010) is about two exceptionally heavy losers. Jasper seethes with rage because his girlfriend, who is just as much a loser as he is, has just left him. He sees himself as a Kerouac or Bukowski manqu�. He’s writing a novel, although he really can’t write, and he reads parts of it to his friend, KJ, as they molder their days away sitting on the back patio of a Vermont coffee house. As for KJ, for KJ the Sixties still live, though he probably wasn’t even born yet: he laces his tea with shrooms, talks some of the time for no purpose, chills out the rest of the time. And then there’s dweeby Evan: he actually works in the coffee house and alternates between fear that he’ll lose his job if he can’t get Jasper and KJ off the patio and fascination with these two aliens who have taken root on the back porch and say and do strange things --because Evan would like to do something strange for a change but his mother won’t let him. This is a strange play. It’s odd in the choice of characters and how the action hangs together, and the dialogue is elliptical rather than straightforward or narrative. But at heart, The Aliens is a buddy play –it explores how friendship can blossom in the most desolate environment. And the dialogue is awesome.

Circle Mirror Transformation (2009) is amazing, the best play in a collection of four very good plays. It’s also one of the best plays about doing theater that I’ve read –most plays about the dramatic act quickly fall flat: they seem phony, about the surface business and rivalries of the stage and not about the act of creating or what ones creates for. In this play, five people –two men, three women-- meet weekly for an adult drama class. In the class, they do not plays or scenes but improv exercises. The first week, it is counting from one up to six, each person taking the successive number and determining how long to wait before saying it. Later, one person stands in front of the class and plays a classmate, presenting the other person’s life story as his (or her) own. This is the only time we see these people, and we see their lives primarily in the context of these abstract theater exercises. But gradually, over the weeks, a sense of their characters and aspirations builds up: we half-see, half-intuit hidden conflicts that exist between member of the group. There is a denouement of sorts but it would be a crime to unveil it. Suffice it to say, this is a superior piece of theater, drama in the best sense of the word.

In Nocturama (n.d.), a twenty-seven-year-old loser loses his girl and moves back into his mother’s house. He has issues: he doesn’t see why he should try to get back on his feet by himself, he smokes his bong too much, one time he tries to climb into bed with his mother and her boyfriend. The boyfriend has compulsions of his own -for one, a computer game called Nocturama, which he plays obsessively-- and he’s already run through two failed marriages and is on his way to ruining this new relationship. When the son brings a young woman home for dinner, things go south quickly.

In Baker’s sly comedy, Body Awareness (2008), a lesbian couple –Joyce teaches high school, Phyllis is a psychology professor at Shirley State—prepare for Body Awareness Week at the university. Phyllis announces each night’s events, introducing the various guest artists. Joyce has a son, Jared. Phyllis thinks Jared’s autistic, but Jared insists he’s not, just awkward with people. The couple takes in the guest artist for the week, a man who takes photographs of nude women. Phyllis is outraged –it’s male exploitation—Joyce is not, she’s intrigued, actually thinks of asking him to photograph her in the raw. As the week goes on, Phyllis progressively comes unglued. The language is at a more elevated level in this play than it is, say, in The Aliens or Nocturama –after all, Phyllis does teach college --and the dialogue and actions are more overtly funny (although there’s a lot of humor in all these plays). All four of these plays show Baker’s talent.

Deep, droll, and oh-so delicious

Every play I've read by this playwright over the past few days has rated five stars. Okay, her plots seem nearly as random as life (they're not, actually); nevertheless, they acquire peculiar, terrible suspense as they plod along, and her characters are so vividly drawn that they break your heart in their ordinariness.

In a recent interview she claimed that she never thought about it consciously, but all four plays "are about how art can save your life." That was enough for me. I immediately ordered her Vermont Plays and stayed up all night reading the first two: "The Aliens", about two 30-something slackers and a teenager hanging out behind a coffeeshop (much more satisfying and less judgmental than Eric Bogosian's "Suburbia"), and "Circle Mirror Transformation", about five community theatre actors in a "creative acting class" who, without meaning to, reveal those tender, terrible secrets that make us all human. I know, both premises sound horribly unpromising, but her treatment of the characters is at once so unflinching and so compassionate that I found myself laughing out loud, tearing up, and wanting to shoot emails to all my friends about this amazing new playwright.

"Nocturama" was harder to take--it's about Skaggs, a self-hating, depressed young man who moves in with his mom and stepfather to recover but ends up abusing everyone around him. Darkly funny, "Nocturama" is far less flashy and mean-spirited than "August: Osage County" because the real protagonists are not the young man but the vulnerable, flawed people who try so patiently to love him back to health. (Baker has not yet allowed this one to be performed.) The final play, "Body Awareness," is about a lesbian couple and their son Jared, who may or may not have Asperger's syndrome. This one is closest to having a Big Topic to consider (namely, the White Male Gaze), but once again Baker's humanity prevails over political agenda. All four plays unfold in the mythical town of Shirley, Vermont, but while her un-cynical, unhurried stories may remind you of life in Horton Foote's Harrison TX or Garrison Keillor's Lake Woebegone, her beautiful, sometimes brittle voice is distinctly her own.

I wish she'd have written twenty such plays, so I could just sit and eat them like juicy novels, but Annie Baker is only in her early thirties and seems to be turning them out as fast as she can. Her work made me love reading plays again.

Spicy and Spontaneous

Great colloquy. The dialogue grows randomly,yet realistically, into soaring improvisational insights. I was especially absorbed and dazzled by Nocturama and Body Awareness. Baker's plays compel you to discover what's going to happen next.
