The Church of the East: Apostolic & Orthodox, by Mar Bawai Soro

"This extraordinary well-written and exciting book is a thorough and systematic exploration of the spread of early Mesopotamian Christianity and its disputed theology undertaken by a leader of the Church of the East. It is an important historical and patristic study for the self-understanding of the Assyrian Church today. Mar Bawai Soro's scholarship is tightly reasoned and marked by the utmost clarity. Being truthful to the tradition of his Church, the research of Mar Bawai significantly contributes not only to ecumenical encounter but also leads to a better mutual understanding of Fathers, Councils, and Theologies within their respective historical and cultural contexts." (Prof. Dietmar W. Winkler, Chair of the Department of Biblical Studies and Ecclesiastical History, University of Salzburg)

About the Author
Bishop Mar Bawai Soro, an Assyrian Catholic bishop and ecumenist whose passion and life's work have been aimed at the attainment of Christ's prayer for the unity of the Church - "that they may be one" (John 17:21). Born in Iraq, in 1954, his vocation began in Baghdad, as deacon (1973) and later ordained to the priesthood (1982) and episcopacy (1984) in Chicago. He represented the Assyrian Church of the East from 1982-2005, including the dialogue with the Catholic Church, during which time the signing of the "Common Christological Declaration" became a landmark event, ending theological isolation of this Church for 15 centuries. Bishop Soro is considered by many officials "among the architects of the dialogue with the Catholic Church – contributing significantly to its successful progress". Author of numerous papers on the Church of the East's theology and history, he is a leading figure in many ecumenical inter-church forums, including the Pro Oriente Foundation (Syriac Commission).

Church of the East, not Eastern Orthodox Church
By Patrick R. Novak
This book is the published edition of Mar Bawai's dissertation. Most people in the West, those from the empire ruled by Rome, have very little, if any, knowledge of the Church of the East, which had its origin and life among Persian and successor empires.

Mar Bawai does a good job of explaining the Church of the East's continuing reverence for Nestorious and Theodore of Mopsuestia. Long past the Christological controversies of the Early Church and Councils, he guides us through a more balanced understanding of these two early giants of the church. Indeed, so much ground has been made up, that of late, there has been a reproachment between the Church of the East and almost all of the churchs of the West.

I found the most important aspect of this work was the telling of the absolutly compelling story of the missionary enterprise of the Church of the East as it reached out to India and China. The modern missionary movement and the Pentecostal explosion of the last century have not pride of place in the taking of the Gospel to foreign lands; the Church of the East was in India and China before most of Western Europe was evangelized.

A much-needed, and most wonderful, book
By I. Holder
This book is not only exceptionally informative, but also very readable -- very few authors I find can do both. Looking at this ancient Christian Church, I was informed of not only its origins but also its theologians -- and what wonderful theologians they are. The Eastern theologians are treasures and sources of rich faith and hope -- and they deserve to be more widely known.

Mar Bawai has two aims with this book: to demonstrate the apostolicity of the Church of the East [stressing the direct connection between Jerusalem and Adiabene, rather than from Antioch as is current thought] and also to demonstrate its Orthodoxy, in the 'rehabilitation' of her Saints, Theodore and Nestorius in particular. I, as a humble layman, can make not comments but my own that it does seem other factors were at play, and can but hope and pray that this book helps to heal the sad rift between the Church of the East and other Churches, and that, in the words of Christ, the Church may be one.

Apostolic and Orthodox
By S. E. Moore
I'm glad I purchased this gem before its price skyrocketed making it unavailable to the general public. It is a shame that so few people will get to know the brilliant insights contained in this book.

Mar Bawai Soro, a bishop of the Church of the East known by many outsiders as the "Nestorian" church, provides us with inside information of a Christian church which is little known and often misunderstood by outsiders, particularly its detractors who have labeled it as a heresy. The Church of the East remains an enigma to many western Christians because it developed in the Persian Empire, completely separate and independent from the Latin Church in Rome and the Greek Byzantine Church.

Bishop Soro does a masterful job in refuting a common theory held by many church historians that the Church of the East was an offshoot of the Antiochian Orthodox Church which moved eastward into the Persian Empire from Edessa. Bishop Soro makes his case that the Church of the East has its roots in the earliest apostolic community in first century Jerusalem and is more semitic and Jewish-Christian in nature than its western counterparts. Its earliest converts were Babylonian Jews, many of whom made regular pilgrimages to Jerusalem prior to the Roman war where they undoubtedly had contact with the apostles there. In addition, many Jews, including Jewish Christians, would have fled to the Persian Empire to escape the ravages of Rome.

According to the traditions of the Church, Addai (Thaddeus), who was one of the seventy members in Jesus' outer circle, came to this region between 70 and 100 C.E. and consecrated Pequida as its first bishop in 105 C.E. This indicates that there was already a sizeable Christian community there prior to that event.

In addition, the liturgy is in the Aramaic language and is similar to Jewish liturgies and its earliest bishops had Jewish names and were probably Jewish Christians. Thus we have a form of Christianity which is directly connected to its semitic roots and not tainted by the influence of Hellenism or Platonism.

Bishop Soro also demonstrates the orthodoxy of the church. I have attended a few of their liturgies and have read their literature. There is nothing in its doctrines which contradict the core beliefs of Christianity. They recite the Nicean Creed in their liturgy which indicates that this creed may go back much further than the Nicean Council to the apostles themselves.

This book goes into great detail in explaining the beliefs of Nestorius and Theodore of Mopsuestia, two of its primary church fathers who were wrongly accused of heresy. Nestorius' condemnation was motivated more by politics than by theology. Nestorius believed that the one person of Jesus had two completely distinct and separate natures, one divine and the other human which were not mingled with eachother. Thus the divine nature was neither diluted not diminished by the human nature. In addition, Jesus was fully human in order to set an example and to intercede for the rest of humanity. The idea of the "Logos" taking on human flesh is an anathema to the Church of the East as well as the designation of Mary as the "Mother of God". They believe that the divine nature passed through Mary but could never have been born from Mary.

In many ways, the Church of the East is more orthodox than the western churches. There is no Mariolatry, icons, statues, or images. the only items of reverence are a plain wooden cross and the offering of bread and wine known as the Qurbana.

Please make this book more available to the general public. It has so much to teach us.
