About the Author
Anthony Clavane was born in Leeds in 1960, a year before Don Revie became manager. He started life as a history teacher and is now chief sports writer of the Sunday Mirror.

More than 'just' the football club!

At last I found a book that told more than just the usual football player story.
I've read countless Leeds United football club books and football player books. This time I had the pleasure to read about how it was for him and his family growing up in Leeds, as Leeds Utd fans & all.
To me, it gave insight in city life in the last century, how the city has changed through the years - a subject I've long wanted more knowledge about.
It was a welcome book to get a broader view of LEEDS as a whole.
That it was well written and that the author managed to devide the years into periods, also helped a lot. Every Leeds fan not living in the city or too young to have experienced it himself, will learn from the book. And I guess the elder ones having lived through it will enjoy looking back on it as well.

Football, Leeds and more

Rarely does one get excited by a mere review.
Having read the review I had to get the book.
Why?
Well it was written not for me but about me!
Born in Leeds, brought up on the terraces of Elland Road and struggling with a Jewish identity--this book is me both in type and type-script.
And yet the review cannot encompass the relevance and richness of the book itself.
This book is written by a writer. He knows just how to encompass the things that are part of us yet we could never describe.
The book takes the longings, pains and devotion that we all feel when we belong to something different.
Every second and third generation immigrant knows exactly what the author is saying.
Every Leodensian knows exactly what the author is saying.
Every soccer supporter knows exactly what the author is saying.
It is a story lovingly and well crafted.
It is a book not to be missed or put down.

More than Leeds United

Despite its subtitle, Promised Land is about much more than Leeds United. It's about the city of Leeds, it's the history of a generation growing up in the '70s, it's about the Jewish community in Leeds, and more. Among the things it made me think:
- is geography destiny? How much of the Leeds character comes from its insular past and necessarily self-reliant Yorkshire industries?
- maybe I should go and read the kitchen sink dramas of Sillitoe, Bennett and others,
- I wonder if my mum knows some of these people?
- hey - my Dad worked with that bloke!
- how universal exile is. Clavane himself, his Jewish ancestors, as well as Leeds all have issues around belonging and not belonging, and there is something broader to it.
Plus, it moves along snappily and tells a great set of stories. I recommend it highly.
