Global Climate Change, by Arnold J. Bloom

Mark Twain s comment everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it no longer applies: human activities have altered the global climate, and governments are implementing policies to avoid more extreme perturbations. Global Climate Change examines the factors responsible for global climate change and the geophysical, biological, economic, legal, and cultural consequences of such changes. The book highlights the complexity of decision-making under uncertainty, contrasting the methods that various disciplines employ to evaluate past and future conditions.

This book seems to me a possible breakthrough work because of its scope. Its reach in explaining the field of climate change is unlike anything I ve seen. --Roy Peterson, California Department of Water Resources

This is a unique and indispensable volume for teaching contemporary global change. --Donald R. Strong, University of California, Davis, and Editor-in-Chief, Ecology

Solid First Textbook on Climate Change
By Andrew E. Huemmler
Crass propaganda? Wow, the conspiracy must run deep! Why would the National Academy of Science, an extremely conservative government institution, be worried about climate change? Why would American scientists appointed to the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change...and vetted by the George W. Bush State Department...be worried about catastrophic climate change? It's time for politicians, the media, and mindless bloggers to be honest about the reality and risks of climate change.

Bloom's "Global Climate Change" does just that. It lays out the scientific evidence to date that climate is changing. It is an enjoyable read through-out, not depressing, and often humorous. Bloom clearly captures scientific thinking to date, including discussion of climate models, and the impacts they predict. A few sections need improvement in the next edition, most noticeably the discussion of incoming and outgoing radiation. The coverage of solutions to address climate change is on target. The book is loaded with graphics that help make major points. If you're looking for a comprehensive, text-book type book that covers the wide range of disciplines needed to understand and address climate change, this is a great starting point.

Data-rich text on climate science
By Jim
This data-rich textbook is the best antidote I have found so far to the kind of know-nothingness expressed in the first review. Professor Bloom systematically reviews the nature of the evidence for climate swings over geological time, human history, and the more detailed measurements over recent decades. It has an excellent and accessible discussion of the physics driving natural and anthropomorphic climate changes, and clearly describes not only the conceptual basis for weather and climate modeling, but limitations of models and the resulting long-term predictions arising from them. The strongest part of the generally excellent work is the chapters on climate impacts on the nature and productivity of both agriculture and natural ecosystems, with a detailed and somewhat iconoclastic review of the influential research at various scales, ranging from photosynthetic processes through the nature and predictability of past and future northward shifts in habitable zones for particular crops, plant species, and ecological communities. All of these sections are illustrated with copious and well-crafted figures and tables, and full scientific citations. The final parts of the book concentrate more on potential strategies for adaptation to, and mitigation of, the negative impacts of a continuation and expansion of the warmer and more extreme weather we have seen in the last few decades, and on the political process and policy options going forward. In the late Stephen Schneiders's words, these topics have been a contact sport for practicing scientists. Bloom does a good job of teasing apart the evidence-driven consensus from a certain amount of herd instinct that affects scientists like everybody else, and identifies the sources of major disagreements in areas of controversy. For example, he observes that the major difference between those who think that predicted climate effects will have major impacts on global GDP and those who don't is assumptions about economic discount rates, rather than about actual future costs. Bloom also skewers some of the particularly eqregious cynicism and sophistry that monied interests have inserted into the debate. Not all readers will agree with some of Bloom's policy interpretations (I don't), but they are well-reasoned, backed by numbers, and well worth using to launch a discussion.

The book is intended as a textbook for advanced undergraduate or graduate-school courses, and is also suitable for professional training. However non-scientists who follow Scientific American or similar "popular" science writing will find it quite readable, and clear writing and great graphics make it more enjoyable reading than most textbooks. If I were going to teach a class or lead a seminar on climate science and policy, this is the book I would start with.

Great Details
By A. Hsiao
I need this book for my class SAS 25 at UC Davis. It is a great book with a lot of details. It has a lot of things to digest, but it is a book that is written pretty closely. Professor Bloom or rather the author does a good job in this book to make sure students understand what is going on. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about global climate change because so far it is doing a very good job helping me get through the quarter. I read this book in order to have a much deeper understanding of climate change.
