Due Diligence - A Great Stock Researching Toolkit
By Rocky Martin
I have skimmed a couple of Skonieczny's other books, but for this one I took a deeper dive into the book and I must say I liked what I found. The author outlines his stock investigation methodology providing his insights into how to research a stock. This does not provide information for finding stocks, but is a guide for delving into a stock after it has been put on your radar as a potential buy.

Skonieczny's chief thesis is that stocks are not lottery tickets and you should put the same effort into understanding the company as if you were buying the entire organization. Stocks are after all a fractional ownership of the company. Consumers will often spend more time reviewing a toaster before buying it then they would when purchasing a stock.

Skonieczny's books breaks down into three basic sections: Quick Due Diligence, Medium Due Diligence and Full Due Diligence.

Quick Due Diligence he states can be done in about 10 minutes. It looks at what business is this company in? Is it profitable? Etc. The purpose of this section is too see if a company is worth spending more time and energy on to understand it. If any of these questions come back as negative it is better to pass on the company then too spend a bunch of time analyzing it.

Medium Due Diligence comes after the a company has passed the initial screening from the Quick Due Diligence. Skonieczny says that this stage of the research will take about an hour. It goes into greater depth of some of the previous research, but also introduces new things to research. Some of the topics include: Are the insider's of the company purchasing stock and doing a review of the company's website?

Full Due Diligence is completed after the company has passed both the Quick and Medium Due Diligence stages. This research is the most in depth and time intensive. Skonieczny makes no bones about it that this should take between 3-7 days and “if you are unwilling to put this much work into studying companies, then you should think twice about whether you should be managing your money.” (Page 40, Due Diligence, Skonieczny) In his research, he seeks to gain a complete understanding of the industry and business itself. He advocates getting to know the CEO and other primaries in the company to understand what kind of people they are. Are the ethical, hard working, founders for example.

Pros: the book is short and concise. I read it in about 3 hours. It goes into great depth teaching you how to research and analyze stocks in any industry. It is easy to read. He offers examples of free and paid tools that can assist in your research. Most of the tools are available online.

Cons: I think that that book could be improved by providing a check list at the end of each section that could be photocopied or printed off for each stock that you are researching.

A great primer on the art of due diligence
By Dave M
Full disclosure: I am a fan of Mariusz's work and have got some of my best investment ideas from his excellent newsletter. This is a great book for novice investors and experienced ones alike. Nobody should be investing in individual stocks without a well thought out and systematic due diligence process. Yet as Mariusz points out, most investors barely have a clue about what is in their own portfolio.

Mariusz breaks down the due diligence process into three easy steps: quick due diligence (a quick 10 minute check to determine if you are even interested in going further), medium due diligence (a couple of hour process to find out key information about the company), and full due diligence (several days of more detailed research to gather all the key facts before a decision to buy). He has useful advice for all three steps, including tips of websites that can help speed up your process. I thought the section on researching the background of management was especially good, because this is something that a lot of investors (including myself at times) tend to neglect. Highly recommended and a quick read.

" There are thousands of potential stocks and you need a system to quickly filter out the bad investments. Stock filters are use
By Mr. p
This is a step by step guidebook for researching a public company.

He uses three different levels of due diligence. It is similar to Buffet's strategy of quickly putting an idea in the appropriate pile. For example, "too hard, research more or stop researching."

There are thousands of potential stocks and you need a system to quickly filter out the bad investments. Stock filters are useful but Mariusz proposes something that involves some more qualitative data.

He generally likes to find deep value stocks. This approach is fine but you always run the risk of buying cigar butt companies as Bufffett says. These are companies with only last puff left. In other words, cheap for a reason.

The book certainly outlines a framework that would be usefeful for most intermediate investors.
